Special Education Bus Driver
Responsible for safe and orderly transportation of students with disabilities on assigned route. Operate a school transportation vehicle that transports students with disabilities and other authorized personnel to and from schools or designated locations.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification: Valid Texas driver's license
High School Diploma or GED
Birth Certificate
Special Knowledge/Skills: Must be 18 years of age
Knowledge of special needs of students
Knowledge of student discipline procedures
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Vehicle Operation:
- Knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations, and of the precautions necessary to avoid accidents.
- Responsible for the safety of school children in loading, unloading and transporting them to and from school, special educational trips and to extra-curricular events.
- Physically maneuvers wheelchair students up and down automatic lift.
- Positions students in seats, fastens harnesses and belts, secures students to wheelchair/car seat and wheelchairs/car seats to bus.
- Follows assigned route and adhere to established schedules.
- Maintains discipline on the bus.
- Administers first aid for the purpose of providing emergency or necessary care in accordance with district, state, and federal requirements.
- Maintains effective communication with site staff, family members and caregivers.
Bus and Records Maintenance:
- Follows a set procedure to check the bus each morning ensuring it is in proper working order including checking for proper maintenance and safety.
- At the conclusion of the day's route, prepares the bus for the following day including checking fluid and fuel levels and replacing as needed, cleaning inside and outside of bus, reporting any need for maintenance and repair work, and securing and locking the bus.
- Maintains records including route books and check-out and mileage sheets.
- Demonstrates ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students in school environment and community.
- Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, and administration.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Respects the integrity of the student.
Working Conditions:
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. May be required to lift and position students with physical disabilities; control behavior through physical restraint; and assist non ambulatory students. Exposure to biological hazards. Exposed to extreme temperatures, dust, fumes, and odors.
