Aide Classifications
Aide I - personnel selected and trained for teacher aide classification such as monitor aide, clerical aide, classroom aide or general aide.

Aide II - personnel classified in Aide I who have completed a state-board approved training program, hold a high school diploma or have a general educational development certificate. Only Aide II are employed as an aide in any special education program.

Aide III - personnel in Aide I who hold a high school diploma or general educational development certificate and have completed six semester hours of college credit or have one year experience as an aide in special education.

Aide IV - personnel in Aide I who hold a high school diploma or general educational development certificate and have completed eighteen semester hours of state-board-approved college credit or fifteen hours of state-board-approved college credit and successfully complete an in-service training program equivalent to three college-credit hours.

Qualifications
High school education or equivalency (GED) required. Pass WV State Competency Test for teacher aides. Aptitude for working with students and teachers required. Must have physical ability and stamina to perform all essential functions. Prior experience working with children preferred. Classified as medium to heavy work capacity.

For Autism Mentor: Meets Aide III qualifications and completes a staff development program related to autism as determined by the State Department of Education. Physical ability and stamina necessary for all job tasks. Two years successful experience working with autistic students. Classified as requiring a medium to heavy work capacity.

Reports To
Principal, teacher or supervisor.

Responsibilities

Aide in lunchroom monitoring and occasional clean-up.

Assist students in moving about the building and on/off the school bus.

Assist students with bathroom facilities and other necessary requirements.

Obtain knowledge of operation of equipment or assistive technology required by students.

Supervise and help serve in the lunchroom (Food Handler's Card required).

Supervise on the playground and indoor activities during inclement weather.

Supervise the loading and unloading of buses.

Prepare classroom activities, such as setting up audiovisual equipment, projectors, tape recorders, computers.

Ride and supervise on the school bus as needed.

Assist handicapped students in the classroom, restroom, playground, and movement in and out of the building; perform diaper changing, feeding, lifting, and potty training; trained in specialized health-care procedures.

Perform general clerical work; typing at 40 words per minute and operate office machines for teachers.

Conduct instructional duties as directed by the teacher.

Prepare and care for instructional materials.

Maintain and care for equipment.

Follow county policy and procedures.

Maintain positive work habits and attitudes.

Perform duties efficiently and productively.

Maintain a professional appearance.

Promote positive public communications.

Cooperate with principals and teachers to enhance the overall learning situation.

Maintain constant surveillance of students as outlined by the teacher and principal; legally responsible for student supervision.

Ensure student safety and comfort as required by the principal or teacher.

Track student projects and collect data.

Complete CPR, First Aid & Crisis Prevention Intervention training.

Maintain and/or upgrade relevant skills.

Participate in special-education aquatic water program if special-needs students are involved.

Perform other related tasks as assigned by teacher, principal or supervisor.

Salary and Benefits
Salary is pursuant to the Brooke County Service Personnel Salary Schedule.

Salary is based on experience and education level per CBOE salary schedule and includes competitive benefits equal to approximately 35% of direct compensation.

Term of employment: 200 days.

Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with the Brooke County Board of Education Policy on Evaluation of Service Personnel.
