The Covenant School, an independent Christian Liberal Arts & Sciences school in Charlottesville, Virginia, is seeking a dedicated educator to teach Visual Art in the Middle School (grades 6-8) beginning in the 2026-27 school year. Our school, which serves over 750 students from Pre-K through Grade 12, is a gospel-centered community of faith and learning committed to the formation of the whole person through a rich and humane education. Position Overview
The Middle School Visual Art Teacher plays an important role in the formation of students through the practice of visual art during a pivotal stage of development. We are seeking an educator who enjoys working with adolescents and who approaches teaching with both joy and seriousness of purpose. The teacher will lead the required visual art sequence for students in grades 6-8 and may have the opportunity to teach an elective course, depending on the expertise of the candidate and the needs of the school.

Through drawing, painting, sculpture, and other media, the teacher helps students develop technical skill, artistic discipline, and habits of attention and craftsmanship. The teacher establishes a classroom environment marked by clear expectations, encouragement, and purposeful engagement in the creative process. The Visual Art Teacher integrates Christian faith naturally and thoughtfully into classroom life and fosters an environment in which students encounter the goodness, truth, and beauty of God’s creation.

The Visual Art Teacher collaborates closely with colleagues in the Middle School and across divisions, contributing to the shared work of forming students within a Christian liberal arts education.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Art, Art Education, or a related field required

Experience teaching middle students preferred

Strong background in visual art techniques and media

Ability to integrate Christian faith naturally and thoughtfully in the context of teaching
