Employment Status:

Non-Exempt, UFCW 1459 Laborers, Full-Time (40 Hours/Week)

Schedule:

Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM

Certifications/Licenses Required:

Massachusetts Class D Driver’s License, CDL Class A or B – preferred; Massachusetts Pesticide Applicator’s License; MA 2B Hoisting License – preferred.

SUMMARY
The City of Chicopee’s Department of Public Work’s Parks Department is hiring a Grounds Maintenance Craftsman who will be responsible for maintaining and landscaping all aspects of Parks and Cemetery property, including ground cover, shrubs, flowers and trees. Performs a wide variety of tasks including manual labor and operating machinery, vehicles and tools. Must also request, maintain and order supplies needed for maintaining the grounds and keep appropriate accurate records manually or digitally.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES INCLUDE:

Responsible for turf maintenance in parks or other parcels used for active or passive recreation.

Top dress, seed, fertilize, and aerate various fields; apply herbicide and pesticide treatments; store chemicals properly; maintain turf equipment; plan maintenance schedules; order agricultural supplies; keep records.

Operate and repair irrigation systems; open/close systems, tag heads for aeration, repair leaks, replace heads.

Landscaping tasks such as planting, transplanting shrubs, flowers and trees; trimming, weeding, pruning; knowledge of invasive species; maintain a plantings nursery.

Operate a tractor/backhoe with attachments.

Perform miscellaneous manual duties: raking, shoveling, digging, hammering, painting, climbing ladders, lifting, bending, crawling, pulling, pushing; use manual tools; maintain parks, recreation areas, athletic fields, playgrounds.

Operate machines, vehicles and tools safely to cut and trim grass, remove brush, groom and repair sport fields; use power tools, chainsaw, mower, snow/leaf blower, groomer, seeder, painting machine, sprayer, spreader, weed whip, truck, cart, pallet jack, skid steer, compressor.

Work in cold or foul weather for safe and usable facilities: snow removal, ice removal, plowing, shoveling, debris removal, prepare parks, ice rinks, sidewalks, parking lots, streets.

Renovate or repair fences, restrooms, water fountains, irrigation, pools and drainage systems.

Perform custodial duties: remove trash, clean floors, wash windows, wash equipment.

Use chemicals safely to clean comfort stations, remove graffiti, fuel equipment, balance pool water, apply paint and other applications.

Observe and report conditions in parks and sport fields; detect vandalism, wear and tear or mechanical failure.

Detect machine malfunctions by listening for unusual sounds; discuss variations with supervisor to diagnose issues.

Complete paperwork or computer‑based forms accurately: tasks accomplished, inventory, preventative maintenance log, field observations, treatments performed, requests for quotes, time usage.

Store herbicides, pesticides, turf chemicals, granular fertilizers, seed and other materials safely.

Make purchases on behalf of the City with supervisor permission.

Perform all other related tasks assigned by the Superintendent of Parks and Recreation and/or Superintendent of Public Works.

Abide by City of Chicopee Health and Safety policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS

Valid Massachusetts Class D Driver’s License; CDL Class A or B preferred.

Massachusetts Pesticide Applicator’s License.

Massachusetts 2B Hoisting License preferred.

Working knowledge of tools, equipment and materials used for public works/parks repair and maintenance.

Ability to work effectively in emergencies.

Ability to interpret plans and specifications and layout work.

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other City employees, City departments, divisions and the general public.

Ability to report findings and communicate effectively; administrative abilities.

Ability to work independently.
