Position Summary
The Communications Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the communications and public relations efforts of the UF | Florida Semiconductor Institute. This position focuses primarily on writing, while also assisting in the design and production of a variety of internal communications materials and media. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, highly organized, capable of translating complex technological concepts into clear, engaging content, and possess an eye for basic graphic design. This role provides an exciting opportunity to contribute to FSI's communication initiatives while gaining valuable experience in a flexible, hybrid work environment.
Key Responsibilities
Content Creation, Writing, & Design
Assists in translating messages using words, images, sounds, and animation to implement effective communication materials and campaigns.
Creates or assists with content for brochures, memos, newsletters, websites, and digital platforms.
Assists with establishing information and public relations campaigns to facilitate the dissemination of information across the university and to external industry stakeholders.
Help with graphic design tasks using Adobe Creative Suite or Canva.
Drafts and thoroughly proofreads copy for email campaigns, social media posts, and special projects.
Submits all written and visual work for final review and approval before release.
Collaborates closely with the Marketing Assistant to ensure all copy aligns with graphic design assets and marketing objectives.
Provides advice and consultation on communication formats to ensure clarity and accuracy.
Tracks performance and analytics of content across campaigns to inform new strategies.
Provides event support when needed, including logistics, setup, and breakdown.
Website Support
Assists in updating and maintaining the institute's website and ensuring content is accurate and up to date.
Monitors website content for compliance with UF policies and branding.
$15.00 per hour
Required Qualifications
Must be
currently enrolled as a student
(undergraduate or graduate)
Must maintain
good academic standing
Usually limited to
up to 20 hours per week
during the semester
May be allowed to work more hours during breaks (e.g., summer), depending on policy

Additional Departmental Requirements
Specific skills (e.g., administrative, technical, customer service)
Prior experience (sometimes preferred, not always required)

Preferred Qualifications
Basic graphic design skills and experience with design software (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite).
Experience in higher education, technology, or scientific/technical communication sectors.
Working toward a degree or equivalent experience in journalism, communications, public relations, graphic design, or a related field.
Familiarity with content management systems (e.g., WordPress), email marketing tools (e.g., Mailchimp), and operational databases (e.g., Airtable).
Special Instructions to Applicants
Part‑time position requiring a commitment of 20 hours per week.
Flexible work hours between 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
Hybrid work flexibility available.
