Position Summary
Young Adult Services (YAS) serves students aged 18-26 across Ottawa County, with buildings in three locations around the Ottawa ISD service area. YAS serves students with moderate to severe disabilities who will not earn a high school diploma, even with additional years of school, a personal curriculum, or other accommodations or modifications. We work on all aspects of increasing student independence and transitioning into adult life, with an emphasis on community participation, work‑readiness, and functional academic skills.

This vacancy is for a full‑time Teacher in a Tier 2 classroom based in

Holland, MI

serving the

southern portion of Ottawa County . Our classrooms are tiered for levels of support from 1‑5, with 1 being the highest supervision and 5 being the least. The geographic service area and assignment location are subject to change based on student needs.

The ideal candidate for a Tier 2 classroom will be an instructional leader, demonstrating confidence, resilience, and a collaborative spirit. Teachers at this tier will have a wide range of student needs and abilities. Successful teachers will be able to provide direct instruction on daily living skills and adult living while also introducing students to job or volunteer sites.

Essential Job Functions

Provide direct instruction in functional academics, daily living skills, vocational skills, and community-based instruction aligned with student IEP goals.

Develop lesson plans, instructional materials, and adaptive curriculum tailored to student needs and abilities.

Implement transition plans, including career exploration, job coaching, community experiences, and independent living activities.

Assess student progress regularly; collect data and adjust instruction to meet individualized goals.

Manage and coordinate IEPs in compliance with state and federal requirements, including scheduling and conducting meetings with families and service providers.

Collaborate with paraprofessionals, job coaches, related service providers, and outside agencies to ensure student success.

Foster a safe, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment that encourages independence, self‑advocacy, and social/emotional growth.

Provide supervision and instruction during community outings, vocational placements, and work-based learning experiences.

Maintain accurate records of student attendance, progress, and behavior.

Participate in professional development activities to stay current with best practices in transition and special education.

Transport students to and from community-based activities and events in a safe and responsible manner while following district policies and applicable laws.

Other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

Experience working with adults or high school aged students with moderate disabilities is preferred.

Experience with community-based instruction and community agencies is preferred.

Must be willing to be trained in crisis de-escalation.

Tier 2 teachers must have experience working with students or adults with behavioral difficulties. They should understand the FBA/PBSP process and have experience with positive behavioral interventions.

MI driver’s license required. Must meet district standards for an acceptable driving record.

Proper

Special Education certification

is required. Cognitive Impairment endorsement (SA) or Autism Spectrum Disorder endorsement (SV) are preferred.

Strong understanding of IDEA, MARSE, and transition requirements.

Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.

Patience, flexibility, and creativity in teaching life and work skills.

Ability to differentiate instruction and modify curriculum for diverse learners.

Ability to build relationships with students, families, and community partners.

Physical & Environmental Requirements

Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 25 pounds with or without mechanical assistance.

Support students with mobility, self‑care, or behavior needs as required.

Transport and supervise students in community and vocational settings.

Compensation & Employment Details

Pay: Per OAEA Master Agreement

Calendar and schedule: Full-Year, Full-Time 185 days (186 for new staff)

Benefits: Full benefits package, including health, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance. MPSERS provided retirement plan.

FLSA: Exempt
