Purpose Statement
The job of Teacher Special Education was established for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional process by serving as a teacher with specific responsibility for developing special education students' success in academics, interpersonal skills and activities of daily living; supervising students within the classroom and other assigned areas; developing lesson plans and delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines; collaborating with other teachers, other professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues; and responding to a wide range of inquiries from students' parents or guardians regarding instructional programs and student progress.
This job reports to Principal
Essential Functions
Administers developmental testing programs, district assessments and/or state tests for the purpose of assessing student competency levels and/or developing individual learning plans.
Administers under supervision first aid and assistance to medically fragile children for the purpose of providing appropriate care.
Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of communicating expectations, achievements, and developing methods for improvement.
Assesses student progress towards objectives, expectations and/or goals for the purpose of providing feedback.
Collaborates with professional learning community and other staff for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes.
Counsels students to improve performance, health, problem solving, and personal issues.
Demonstrates methods required to perform classroom assignments for the purpose of providing an effective program.
Differentiates classroom work for the purpose of providing students with materials that address individualized plans.
Directs para professionals, volunteers and/or student workers for the purpose of an effective classroom program.
Instructs students for the purpose of improving success in academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills.
Maintains confidential and non-confidential records for the purpose of providing up-to-date information.
Manages student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe environment.
Monitors students in various educational environments for safety.
Participates in meetings such as SAP, IEP, PLC, etc. for information gathering.
Prepares written materials for documenting progress and meeting requirements.
Reports incidents for maintaining student safety and compliance.
Responds to emergency situations to resolve safety concerns.
Responds to inquiries from various sources to resolve issues.
Schedules students with para professionals for therapeutic instruction.
Supports classroom teachers for implementing curriculum and student plans.
Other Functions
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Skill-Based Competencies: applying assessment instruments, operating standard office equipment, using software applications, preparing and maintaining accurate records.
Knowledge-Based Competencies: Board of Education codes, policies, District procedures, age appropriate activities, lesson plans, stages of child development, behavioral management strategies.
Ability-Based Competencies: establishing constructive relationships, adapting to changing priorities, maintaining confidentiality, exhibiting tact and patience, working flexible hours.
