Simon & Schuster is a global leader in general interest publishing. Simon Maverick, a division of Simon & Schuster, seeks an Editor to join our imprint focused on publishing audiobooks from independent and hybrid authors. This role reports directly to the VP, Editorial Director and works closely with authors, agents, production, publicity, marketing, sales, and subrights to pursue opportunities across fiction and non‑fiction.
Responsibilities
Acquire projects for audiobook, evaluating frontlist and backlist titles, with a focus on independent/self‑published/hybrid authors.
Identify independent authors, creators and select small presses, engage them for publication, and work with agents representing independent/hybrid authors.
Negotiate multi‑faceted publishing deals that include rights acquisition, content development guidelines, delivery schedules and other production commitments, sometimes across multiple formats.
Coordinate and collaborate with production departments to shepherd projects from acquisition to publication.
Maintain relationships and collaborate with other divisions of Simon & Schuster for potential joint publications across multiple formats and imprints.
Manage title acquisition P&Ls that capture the dynamic complexity of assessing the finances of publications across multiple formats.
Coordinate with sales and marketing teams to explore all possible sales and promotional opportunities for our titles.
Manage a rapidly expanding list of audiobooks and print titles in varied stages of development across diverse editorial categories and production formats.
Qualifications
Minimum 5 years of experience in book publishing in relevant editorial or acquisitions positions, with a strong acquisitions track record.
Working knowledge of the independent, hybrid, and/or non‑traditional author space and the platforms authors use.
A solid network of publishing industry contacts.
Self‑starter with willingness to make primary contact on potential projects.
Experience acquiring commercial fiction (e.g., romance, fantasy, horror, historical, mystery, non‑fiction in true crime, health, wellness, spirituality, bio/memoir) and other genres published outside the traditional space.
Exceptional initiative, curiosity, and autonomy from day one.
Ability to adapt to ever‑changing production necessities and schedules across multiple formats.
Experience in content acquisition and evaluation.
Strong and demonstrable editorial and project management skills.
Experience creating P&Ls and managing them to incorporate changing inputs and financial goals across multiple formats.
Ability to cultivate an editorial perspective that assesses and speaks to the current cultural moment and anticipates the next.
