Job Description
The Reading Interventionist is responsible for supporting student achievement in the area of English Language Arts, with special attention to reading. The Interventionist provides individual or small group instruction to students who are struggling academically, and monitors, reports, and communicates student progress and performance.
Education and Experience
Minimum of a Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
Certification and Licensure Requirements (if applicable)
Must hold or be qualified to hold a North Carolina Professional Educator’s License.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks
Provides high-quality instruction to individual students and small groups
Uses data to provide instruction and help students reach grade-level skills
Collaborates with teachers, administration, and families to identify best practices for individual and small groups of students
Uses identified research-based interventions focusing specifically on individual student needs
Maintains data-based documentation of continuous monitoring of student performance and progress
Provides data to school teams and participates in decisions about student progress
Communicates with teachers, administration, and families regarding student progress
Assists with identifying students for placement in intervention groups
Participates in meetings with teachers, administration, and families to discuss student placement and progress
Provides diagnostic assessments for students as needed
Provides input for program development
Supports implementation of assessment tools and data management systems
Attends appropriate trainings to improve knowledge and skills
Provides staff development opportunities
Performs other related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Solid understanding of research best practices
Understanding the growth and development of students to whom they are assigned
Knowledge of students’ growth, development, and learning
Skilled in assessment and using its data for teaching and learning
Ability to meet the needs of all learners
Ability to motivate students
Ability to maintain a clean and orderly environment
Ability to perform general clerical duties
Ability to maintain order and discipline in a classroom
Ability to operate common office machines and technology
Ability to develop and compile records and reports
Ability to maintain basic files and records
Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
Ability to speak effectively to exchange information
Ability to receive and perform instructions, assignments, and directions from supervisors
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments
Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions
Adaptability to performing under stress and in emergency situations
Ability to exercise considerable tact and courtesy in frequent contact with the public
Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures, follow oral and written instructions
Experience with Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)
Experience with the use of technology in the delivery of instruction to students
Physical Requirements
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Employees in this job must be energetic and flexible and possess the visual acuity to prepare data, work with records processes, and do extensive reading and research. Due to amount of time spent standing and/or walking, physical requirements are consistent with those for Light work.
