Job Description Summary
Postdoc Position (in the Norris Lab). The laboratory of Dr. Norris in the Department of Regenerative Medicine and Cell Biology is looking for a postdoctoral fellow to work on hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. We are looking for creative candidates with a strong background in molecular biology and genetics, a keen interest in developmental biology, experience in working with animal models, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and experience with grant submissions. Experience with performing analyses related to various omics techniques such as RNAseq, scRNAseq, ATACSeq, and downstream analyses is preferred. Additional experience with performing and analyzing Whole Exome Sequencing as well as dealing with large datasets related to genome-wide association studies is a plus. The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate a significant level of independence and scientific initiative. The applicant should also be able to demonstrate ability to mentor students at the graduate and undergraduate levels.

Responsibilities

Research – Essential (35%) : To develop and conduct research within the context of funded projects in consultation with, and under the supervision of, Dr. Norris. Individuals will design and implement experiments relevant to the project.

Mentorship – Essential (25%) : To assist in training graduate students and other laboratory personnel. The successful candidate will mentor at least two graduate students on the project, conduct one‑on‑one meetings to review datasets, troubleshoot, and aid experimental design, and extend mentoring to undergraduate and high school interns.

Publications – Essential (15%) : To draft manuscripts for publication in reputable peer‑reviewed scientific journals and present work at local, national, and/or international conferences.

Grants – Essential (15%) : To work closely with the PI on developing research grant proposals for the laboratory and to apply for postdoctoral fellowship awards from NIH, foundations, and other funding sources.

Documentation – Essential (10%) : To maintain accurate and up‑to‑date laboratory records, including inputting data into electronic laboratory notebooks (LabArchives and Box) for all Norris lab investigators to access within MUSC.

Minimum Requirements
PhD/MD or equivalent.

Physical Requirements
The position requires the ability to perform job functions in upright and seated positions, walk and climb stairs, lift and carry objects up to 15 lbs., perform repetitive hand motions, maintain good vision and hearing, and demonstrate basic dexterity. Candidates must possess a valid driver’s license, computer literacy, and willingness to work rotating shifts and overtime as needed.
