AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. The Global Engineering Strategy (GES) team seeks a senior data center engineer to drive front‑end engineering and design strategy for new owned and leased site developments. You will lead engineering due diligence, site master planning, and overall design strategy while maintaining high performance standards and using innovation to reduce budgets and increase efficiency.
Responsibilities
Collaborate with internal stakeholders during the due diligence phase to oversee the process and ensure design requirements are considered.
Gather data with internal teams to ensure prerequisites for the start of the design stage are met.
Lead the pre‑design phase, managing internal partners and external vendor consultants to deliver design‑ready deliverables for successful execution.
Develop rollout strategy for new data center design types that influence site master plans and design strategy.
Provide engineering design decisions to partner teams for strategic planning and region selection.
Collaborate with other DCE teams developing new data center infrastructure products and design execution disciplines (civil, mechanical, electrical, structural engineering, and architects) to assess product deployment for site development projects.
Work on concurrent projects in multiple geographical regions.
Escalate issues as required and communicate clearly and effectively at the appropriate level of detail with stakeholders of varied technical abilities, backgrounds, and leadership levels.
Demonstrate strong leadership, clear communication, and a consistent track record of delivery.
Apply creative engineering balanced with high quality and customer focus.
Thrive in a fast‑paced environment and lead project teams through ambiguity.
Understand best practices for data center project delivery.
Travel will occasionally be necessary but should not exceed 25%; international support will be part of the job.
Basic Qualifications
6+ years of industrial or commercial engineering in mission‑critical facilities (e.g., data centers, power generation, or oil and gas).
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
Professional Engineering or Architectural License.
Knowledge of continuously operating redundant electrical systems, cooling systems, airflow containment systems, and building management systems.
Experience carrying design concepts through exploration, development, and deployment or mass production.
Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents.
