Patient Care Technician

is looking for a Patient Care Technician for their Cardiac Unit. This is a full‑time (36 hours per week year round) day
ight rotating shift position with every 3rd weekend and every other holiday required. Title and starting pay may vary based on years of experience.
The Patient Care Technician (PCT) performs a variety of patient‑care duties, including assisting with patient procedures and activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning, and repositioning patients. The PCT completes medical record documentation in accordance with established procedures, reports equipment malfunctions, and contributes to unit activities such as responding to call lights, handling telephones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients. Effective communication with patients, families, colleagues, and other departments is essential. The PCT provides feedback to the RN regarding patient care, reports changes in patient status, and offers instruction to patients and their families under RN direction.
Responsibilities
Perform in accordance with system‑wide competencies/behaviors.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Assure equipment malfunctions are reported to the appropriate department, establish effective communication with other departments, maintain professional interpersonal relationships, and contribute to unit activities such as responding to call lights, handling telephones, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.
Constructively receive feedback and direction; identify and communicate learning needs to the unit director; take action to improve knowledge, skills, and performance; request assistance in planning and prioritizing activities; and participate in self‑review as requested by the unit director.
Communicate clearly and effectively with all members of the health‑care team, demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity, horizontal violence, and impairment in the health professions, care for patients and self by supporting workplace safety, and develop productive relationships internally and externally through accountability, enthusiasm, motivation, and commitment to patients and colleagues.
Document in the medical record according to established procedures, perform assigned work in a timely and productive manner, and complete department clerical functions as needed.
In addition to standard competencies, achieve and maintain competency in at least one or more advanced skills based on departmental need: peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia management, and NG tube clamping and removal.
Routinely perform UPMC nursing core nursing assistant responsibilities, including ADLs, point‑of‑care testing (e.g., blood glucose), weights, vital signs, I/O, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, HAC & PSI prevention (TEDs/SCDs), simple dressings, placement/removal of restraints, 12‑lead EKG, bladder scan, and all specimen collections. All competencies must be achieved.
Provide instruction to patients and their families under RN direction and apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints as per physician or hospital protocol.
Assist with patient procedures and activities of daily living, support physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies, provide feedback to the RN regarding patient care, and report changes in inpatient status.
Strictly adhere to all policies and procedures related to patient care and hospital information, complying with safety policies and procedures, including standard precautions.
Suggest and support changes within the department, take responsibility for assignments, view problems as challenges, demonstrate awareness of behavior on departmental efficiency, and support department‑based projects and quality initiatives.
