The Maintenance Mechanic I is an entry‑level role responsible for performing basic mechanical, electrical, and facility maintenance in a fast‑paced ice cream production environment. This position supports equipment reliability, food safety, and continuous operation of processing, mixing, freezing, packaging, and warehousing systems.
Role and Activity
Safety
Demonstrate thorough knowledge of “Best Safety Practices”.
Comply with all company safety policies and procedures.
Troubleshoot unsafe conditions and take appropriate levels of corrective action.
Take an active role to ensure that human safety is never compromised.
Utilize daily forklift safety checklist.
Quality
Demonstrate superior knowledge of all quality systems.
Comply with the Good Manufacturing Practices.
Complete and document all product quality checks (appearance, packaging etc…).
Complete and document all food safety checks as required by the plant HACCP program.
Complete and document all product quality checks as required by the plant MCP program.
Actively participate in preventing and correcting potential quality related issues.
Active participation in food safety investigations.
Operational
Repairs and preventative maintenance of all the Refrigeration systems, HVAC systems, inspecting the equipment, and performing daily rounds to ensure compliance of our PSM and RMP policies
Ability to understand refrigeration advanced 2-stage design concepts such as the “down flow” design as well as the traditional 2-stage refrigeration system design
Perform routine and breakdown maintenance of boilers, air compressors, condensers systems, and waste‑water treatment system
Knowledge of the typical refrigeration cycle and of ammonia control valves and related piping as needed for safe service and repair
Must be able to read and follow basic and advanced drawings and schematics
Provide informal and formal training for other Utility team members as required
Utilize construction and fabrication skills
Ensure PMs are completed in a timely manner and maintain mechanical integrity of the ammonia system per RMP/PSM guidance
Develop corrective work orders as needed
Be actively involved in all of the elements of the PSM/RMP programs
Active member of the emergency response team
Complete daily shift record keeping and reporting as required

Preventive Maintenance Compliance:
Ensure that scheduled preventive maintenance tasks are completed on time and as required for equipment and machinery.
Equipment Downtime:
Minimize unscheduled equipment downtime by addressing breakdowns and repairs promptly, aiming to keep operations running smoothly.
Response Time:
Track the time it takes to respond to maintenance requests and resolve urgent issues, with a goal of reducing downtime.
Work Order Completion:
Measure the efficiency of work order completion, including the time taken to complete maintenance tasks from request to resolution.
Safety Adherence:
Comply with safety regulations and best practices in maintenance activities to reduce safety incidents and risks.
Skill Development:
Pursue training and skill development opportunities to improve proficiency in equipment repair and maintenance.

Work Environment
In this position, the employee will regularly work with and around others; in a wet and/or humid environment; in areas of high noise level; and around mechanical, electrical, and pressurized equipment. The work is fast paced.
The position involves frequent exposure to nuts and other potential allergens.
The pay scale for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. At Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. The pay range for prospective employees in this role is $28.08 per hour.
