Patient Care Technician - 7E Med Surg

Job Summary
The Patient Care Technician (PCT) reports to the Nurse Manager. Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the PCT performs multi‑skilled activities to support a decentralized patient‑centered approach to patient care and achieve desired outcomes.

Schedule and Hours
3 12‑hour rotating shifts per week, including weekends and holidays. 36 hours per week.

Minimum Training and Education

High School Diploma or equivalent required for Patient Care Technician I.

For Patient Care Technician II: highest of the following required: Associate or Bachelor’s degree; at least 1 year work experience in a 0.6 FTE PCT I position at MUSC CHS; 1 year of experience in a healthcare facility; active enrollment in nursing school with completion of Nursing Fundamentals from an accredited institution; active enrollment in a healthcare‑related field from an accredited institution; Certified Nursing Assistant or Certified Medical Assistant Certification from an accredited institution.

Licensure, Certifications, Registrations
Basic Life Support required within 2 weeks of hire. Thereafter, must maintain Current Basic Life Support (BLS), either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.

Physical Requirements
Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs (infrequent), working indoors and outdoors in temperature extremes (infrequent), working from elevated areas (frequent), working in confined/cramped spaces (frequent), performing job functions from kneeling positions (infrequent), bending at the waist (continuous), twisting at the waist (frequent), squatting (frequent), pinching operations (frequent), gross motor activities with fingers and hands (continuous), firm grasping (continuous), fine manipulation (continuous), reaching overhead (frequent), repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows/shoulders (continuous), using both legs fully (continuous), using lower extremities for balance and coordination (frequent), reaching in all directions (continuous), lifting and carrying 50 lbs unassisted (infrequent), lifting/lowering objects 50 lbs from/to floor from/to 36 in unassisted (infrequent), lifting from 36 in to overhead 25 lbs (infrequent), exerting up to 50 lbs of force (frequent). Examples include: to transfer a 100 lb patient requires 50 lbs of force; for every additional 100 lbs, assistance will be required from another healthcare worker; 20 lbs of force needed to push a 400 lb patient in a wheelchair on carpet; 25 lbs of force required to push a stretcher with a patient with one hand. Ability to maintain 20/40 vision corrected, in one eye or both eyes (continuous), see and recognize objects close at hand or at a distance (continuous), match or discriminate between colors (continuous), determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception (continuous), good peripheral vision capabilities (continuous). Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction (continuous), perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements (continuous), deal effectively with stressful situations (continuous), work rotating shifts (frequent), work overtime as required (frequent), work in a latex safe environment (continuous), maintain tactile sensory functions (continuous), maintain good olfactory sensory function (continuous, selected positions), qualify physically for respirator use initially and as required (continuous, selected positions).
