Job Summary

The Field Engineering Apprentice at Louisville Geek is an entry‑level technical role focused on building real‑world IT experience through hands‑on, on‑site work. This position supports field engineers and project teams while developing a broad foundation in IT systems, infrastructure, and client environments. The role is designed for individuals beginning their IT career through apprenticeships, workforce development, educational programs, or early‑career opportunities, offering exposure to multiple areas of technology and a clear path forward. Apprentices who demonstrate strong performance and work ethic are developed into full Field Engineer roles with expanded responsibilities and compensation within 12–24 months.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Support Field Engineers during on‑site client visits, installations, and technical projects.

Assist with the installation and setup of IT infrastructure components such as switches, access points, patch panels, racks, cameras, and related equipment.

Help install, terminate, label, and test network cabling, including Cat6 and fiber optic cable, under supervision.

Assist with hardware deployments including desktops, laptops, servers, printers, and peripherals.

Perform basic troubleshooting related to hardware, connectivity, and physical infrastructure, escalating issues as appropriate.

Participate in site surveys and assessments to support project planning and implementation.

Assist with equipment staging, inventory preparation, and pre‑deployment setup.

Follow documented procedures, safety guidelines, and best practices while working in client environments.

Document work performed, site conditions, and updates accurately for internal records.

Maintain a professional and customer‑focused presence during all client interactions.

Actively develop technical skills through hands‑on experience and mentorship.

Education and Experience

Valid driver's license and a clean driving record required.

Current enrollment in, or recent completion of, a technical, vocational, workforce development, or educational program related to information technology or equivalent entry‑level experience preferred.

Prior professional IT experience is not required.

Prior experience in a trades, service, or customer‑facing role is a plus.

Strong interest in technology, problem solving, and hands‑on learning is essential.

This role may support co‑op, work‑based learning, or academic credit arrangements where applicable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Interest in IT systems, infrastructure, and technology concepts.

Basic understanding of computer hardware and networking is preferred but not required.

Willingness to learn installation, troubleshooting, and field support techniques.

Ability to follow instructions, procedures, and safety standards.

Professional communication skills and a customer‑service‑focused mindset.

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Ability to manage time effectively and complete assigned tasks independently.

Comfortable working in varied environments including offices, equipment rooms, and client sites.

Ability to lift equipment safely and work on ladders or in confined spaces.

Willingness to travel to client sites across the Louisville metro area daily.
