What Will You Do
Provides a high‑consequence‑of‑error role in the Material Controls and Accountability Group (SP‑NMCA). The Software Quality Engineer ensures compliance with Material Control and Accountability requirements by developing and executing software and hardware qualification, testing, and verification plans. The engineer works with nuclear material operations staff and quality engineering professionals to support critical national security work. Data analysis is a core skill developed through this role.

Position requires frequent formal auditor reviews to maintain the highest standards for software qualification and verification.

Software Quality Engineer 3
The engineer works within a high‑functioning software and quality assurance team that adheres to formal operations and structured engineering standards. Responsibilities include:

Contributing to the development of system and software requirements and evaluating testing requirements and methods early in the lifecycle.

Acting as an intermediary with stakeholder communities for nuclear material accountability and control users to solve issues and verify functional correctness.

Adhering to formal operations and structured engineering standards for software development, testing, and quality assurance.

Software Quality Engineer 4
In addition to the responsibilities of a Software Quality Engineer 3, the engineer acts as a leader and manager of quality assurance initiatives for both hardware and software application certification processes.

Providing technical justifications for testing and verification methods for software.

Managing a comprehensive understanding of the mission system and mentoring less experienced staff.

Investing in development of formal methods and standards within DOE and creating supporting documentation.

What You Need
Quality Engineer 3 – Minimum Job Requirements

Experience testing safety and/or risk significant software applications.

Experience producing/authoring formal documentation containing software test justification and results.

Substantial knowledge of software testing standards and/or methods.

Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Proven understanding of computer networking.

Experience working closely with numerous customers in defining expectations and recognizing when software modifications are appropriate.

Ability to review and understand end‑to‑end operational work processes.

Comprehensive understanding of contemporary software engineering best practices for hardware and software integration and testing, and software lifecycle maintenance and quality management.

Experience working in highly dynamic team environments with frequent priority changes (multi‑tasking).

Experience working in highly structured and rigorously formal operational teams that must adhere to written procedures.

Outstanding writing skills and proven communication skills.

Quality Engineer 4 – Additional Requirements

Expert hands‑on experience applying Software Quality Assurance principles to hardware and software.

Experience testing large systems that require integration of hardware and software testing/verification with failover scenarios.

Extensive experience troubleshooting and resolving issues for a large population of software/system users.

Expert hands‑on experience presenting technical information in understandable forms to both management and users.

Education and Experience
Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Engineering, Quality Assurance, Industrial Systems Engineering, or a related field and 8 years of related experience (Level 3) or 12 years of experience (Level 4); or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications

Experience developing automated software/hardware test scripts using SmartBear.

Knowledge and experience in NMCA processes, nuclear material control methods, NMCA policy requirements, and security obligations per DOE Order 474.2a.

Familiarity applying quality assurance regulatory, contractual, and technical documents, e.g., LANL P1040, DOE Order 414.1E, 10 CRF 830, NQA‑1, and TRIAD contract requirements relevant to software quality assurance activities.

Experience working at nuclear materials operations facilities with highly regulated structures and requirements.

Location
The work location is onsite in Los Alamos, New Mexico. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Clearance
Position requires a Q clearance. Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Q clearance requires U.S. citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances.
