Responsibilities
Collaborates and cooperates with care team members to ensure consistency and quality of care and promotes productive employee relations among staff members. Demonstrates an understanding of and commitment to continuous improvement and the mission, vision, and values of the DMC.
Performs a variety of basic patient care activities in OB under the direction of a registered nurse, including respiratory procedures, bed/chair repositioning, specimen collection, phlebotomy, dressing changes, ECG, IV lines, urinary catheterization, blood glucose monitoring, etc.
Assists the registered nurse by gathering data on patient conditions, direct observation, obtaining vital signs, recording oral intakes, monitoring input and output, weighing patients, charting patient information, and interacting with patients and family members. Reports pertinent information and completes documentation in accordance with policy and procedures.
Performs surgical scrub using aseptic technique on labor and delivery procedures, assists the physician and/or nurse, maintains an accurate count of sponges, needles, and instruments, and assists with circulation duties.
Assists patients with activities of daily living such as feeding, bathing, toileting, and personal hygiene.
Assists in the training/orientation of other associates and care team members as directed.
Follows all departmental policies, procedures, and continuous improvement initiatives, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
Demonstrates sensitivity to patient comfort and privacy, answers questions, and explains procedures within the scope of training. Maintains confidentiality.
Performs support services duties such as ensuring adequate stock of linens and supplies, transporting patients and specimens, cleaning patient rooms and unit common areas, making beds, removing trash, assisting patients with menu selection, and handling equipment.
Enhances personal growth through participation in workshops, educational programs, in‑service meetings, and reviewing current literature.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED.
Completion of a two‑year surgical technician training program or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Graduation from a school of practical nursing.
Completion of:
Certified nurse assistant program or equivalent training;
Respiratory therapy technician training program;
Medical assistant program;
EMT program;
Phlebotomy training program;
with six months direct patient care experience.
Skills Required
Good analytical and observational problem‑solving skills.
Mathematical ability to perform calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Strong reading, writing, and comprehension skills.
High level of interpersonal and verbal skill and teamwork commitment.
Ability to perform routine clerical functions such as answering the telephone, taking messages, and retrieving basic computer information.
Visual acuity and manual dexterity.
Physical ability to walk, stand, and lift heavy items (60+ pounds), bend, pull, push, and transfer patients.
Ability to adapt to new technologies used in the work environment.

DMC Sinai‑Grace Hospital is the largest hospital in DMC, offering comprehensive services including cardiac, oncology, gerontology, emergency medicine, OB/GYN, and cosmetic care. It features a joint replacement program with minimally invasive knee and hip surgery and operates over 21 outpatient sites and ambulatory surgery centers throughout Wayne and Oakland Counties.
