Summary:
As a part of the Goldbelt Glacier Team, you will be supporting the Naval Logistics Command with medical services for active‑duty military personnel, their dependents, eligible DoD civilian employees, and other eligible beneficiaries designated by the Government. As a HealthCare Worker (HCW), you will be assigned to either a Military Treatment Facility (MTF) or other Federal medical treatment facilities in Japan.

Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions:
The work environment involves risks typically associated with the performance of clinical procedures. The health care worker may be exposed to contagious disease, infections and sharp instruments requiring that he/she wear protection such as sterile gloves, masks and eyeglasses.
The health care worker shall be responsible for a full range of medical assisting procedures in support of examinations and treatment.
Answers clinic telephones, greets patients, answers patient questions about appointment time, TRICARE benefits, waiting times, clinic services and other general questions.
Enters and retrieves data from MHS Genesis, and other appropriate computer systems as needed for patient reception, ensures proper patient identification and eligibility status and updates and confirms patient information. Transcribes physician orders per Standard Operating Procedure.
Schedules all categories of appointments for patients who call or walk in for an appointment; makes follow‑up contact with all patients who do not show up for scheduled appointments in accordance with clinic policy. Reschedules missed appointments as needed.
Obtains and correctly assembles health records. Prepares charts for provider per clinic policy. Record preparation includes, but is not limited to, scanning records for tracking purposes, adding any necessary forms by creating additional outpatient records and filing radiology, laboratory and/or procedure results.
Assists with patient flow and gives direct patient care within scope of responsibility.
Maintains confidentiality of patient‑related issues and intervenes to protect the same.
Assists providers with invasive or non‑invasive examinations or procedures. Set up operative trays for procedures including shave biopsies, punch biopsies, and skin excisions, using sterile technique as appropriate. Performs a variety of ambulatory or inpatient procedures as ordered by and under the supervision of a credentialed provider.
Properly dispose of sharps in the sharps container and return sterile supplies per hospital policy 100% of the time.
Administers oral, intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular medications; proper dosage must be ordered and verified by licensed provider. Administers the appropriate medication and dosage 100% of the time. Records medications administered. Reports and records any reaction to medication and/or treatment.
Correctly labels specimen containers per hospital policy and verifies patient identifiers with the patient 100% of the time.
Correctly labels medication syringes that are not administered immediately, per hospital policy, 100% of the time.
Transports patients to other clinical areas as needed. Enters data into the log/computer upon patient transport. Monitors patient for changes in condition while en route and makes notifications of changes in status as appropriate.
Monitors patients undergoing procedures and identifies patients with acute distress or potential acuity change. Observes significant changes in patient’s condition and reports problems that require higher‑level actions/interventions to the credentialed provider.
Recognizes and responds calmly and appropriately in emergency situations.
Promotes self‑care and assists in the dissemination of information to patients regarding discharge instructions, health promotion, disease prevention and wellness, and available community resources, as outlined in clinic/unit education program.
Operates specialized medical equipment associated with the assigned clinic/unit and commensurate with training (including but not limited to blood pressure monitor, narrow band ultraviolet‑b light box, class IV lasers, hyfrecator, cryac, vacuum smoke evacuator, etc.).
Performs basic diagnostic procedures as ordered and commensurate with training, department standard operating procedures (SOP), and hospital policy (EKGs, blood glucose, urine dipstick, etc.), and notifies supervising professional for diagnosis.
Prepares laboratory, radiology requests and other forms as ordered by providers. Inputs and retrieves information through the use of various computerized information systems and performs end‑of‑day computer processing.
Register and update status in the iPledge system for patients taking isotretinoin.
Transfer photographic documentation of patient care between media formats and upload into electronic medical records within 1 business day.
Attends departmental huddle 5 days a week.
Attends and completes annual renewal of command required training provided by the hospital.
Answers telephones, takes messages, provides and documents patient information using written guidelines. Performs other administrative duties as directed by supervisor.
Assists in the orientation of new personnel.
Maintains equipment and supplies necessary for unit/clinic operation, while maintaining a clean safe environment. Practices and monitors universal precautions. Notifies appropriate supervisor if equipment needs periodic biomedical safety inspection or is in need of repair. Notifies appropriate supervisor for all identified safety hazards or physical security risks.
Participates in organizational/unit performance improvement plan; responsible for supporting performance improvement (continuous improvement) process commensurate with position.
Utilizes assigned patient contact representative to resolve patient dissatisfaction and ensures proper documentation.
Maintains clinical skills, participates in continuing education for the improvement of patient care and demonstrates interest in developing others.
Updates skills and knowledge through participation in departmental in‑service training, command sponsored education opportunities, seminars, workshops and through review of professional literature.
Perform other duties as may be assigned by immediate supervisor.
May be assigned other duties consistent with the normal duties of a Medical Assistant as directed by the Director.
Attend all annual retraining classes required by this command (e.g., BLS certification).
Qualifications
Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
Maintain a level of productivity comparable with that of other individuals performing similar services.
Adhere to and comply with the Department of the Navy, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, and local instructions and notices in effect during the term of the contract.
Practice aseptic techniques as necessary; comply with infection control guidelines to include the proper handling, storage, and disposal of infectious wastes, and the use of universal precautions to prevent the spread of infection.
Function with an awareness and application of safety procedures.
Apply an awareness of legal issues in all aspects of patient care and strive to manage situations in a reduced risk manner.
Exercise awareness and sensitivity to patient/significant others’ rights, as identified within the MTF.
Maintain an awareness of responsibility and accountability for own professional practice.
Maintain DoD email account as directed by government supervisor.
Exercise appropriate delegation of tasks and duties in the direction and coordination of health care team members, patient care, and clinic activities.
Each HCW providing service under this contract or resultant task orders shall undergo an orientation and shall complete mandatory Navy and DoD on‑line training as required.
Be able to comply with all applicable Federal, State, and local laws, Department of Defense, Department of Navy, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, and MTF instructions and policies.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Minimum Qualifications:
Possess a high school diploma or GED certificate.
Be a graduate from a medical assistant training program accredited by Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), OR the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) of the American Medical Technologists, OR a formal medical services training program of the United States Armed Forces, OR other formal program as specified in the position specific task order.
Possess either:
Current certification as a medical assistant by the American Association of Medical Assistants OR registration by the American Medical Technologists
OR
Current other medical assistant certification as specified in the task order.
HCW shall be in good standing, and under no restrictions, with the state licensure board in any state in which a license is held or has been held within the last 10 years.
HCW shall be in good standing and under no sanction or suspension by the Federal Government.
Possess and maintain current certification in either the American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers or American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Course.
The HCW must have a minimum of 1 year full‑time experience providing direct patient care as a paraprofessional (Medical Assistant, Licensed Practical Nurse, Licensed Vocational Nurse, Emergency Medical Technician, or active duty corpsman/medic). Experience as a Dermatology Medical Assistant is preferred but not required.
Able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language fluently and maintain good communication skills with patients and other health care personnel.
Ability to pass all background/suitability checks.
A valid driver’s license; ability to travel locally as needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience as a Dermatology Medical Assistant is preferred.
A thorough understanding of the military lifestyle and experience working with military family members.
Working knowledge of relevant military, state, federal, and local laws and resources.
Highly developed written, oral, and presentation communication skills.
An active Security Clearance is preferred.
