Position Summary
At Stony Brook Medicine, our registered nurses are critical members of the team who diagnose and treat health problems using nursing methods such as case finding, health teaching, and counseling. Our team members provide supportive care to patients’ health and well-being while adhering to a medical regimen.

Responsibilities

Assume Charge RN role on unit, providing first‑level supervision to nursing staff and offering feedback on staff performance.

Responsible for the delivery of nursing care to all assigned patients.

Develop initial nursing assessment and interdisciplinary plan of care within eight hours of admission; review and revise the plan as needed, at minimum every 24 hours.

Prepare daily patient care assignments based on individual patient needs and staff capabilities.

Administer medications and treatments according to physician orders.

Document patient/family teaching and their responses, ensuring consistency with physician or designee instructions.

Act as preceptor for new nursing personnel and students, documenting achieved competencies.

Provide direct patient care in selected instances, serving as a role model, teacher, or resource person.

Monitor the quality of nursing care and documentation of the nursing process through direct interaction with staff and patients.

Complete yearly evaluations and competencies of nursing personnel in collaboration with the nurse manager.

Working Conditions
Exposure to infectious disease, blood, body fluids, or tissue. Incidents may involve accidents, injuries, or illness. Expect irregular hours and pressure from multiple calls and inquiries. The position is classified by OSHA as Category 1.

Physical Demands

Prolonged standing, walking, lifting, and patient transfer.

Lifting supplies and equipment.

Reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching.

Qualifications

At least two (2) years post‑licensure acute care experience in nursing; two (2) years of experience in the area of specialization is preferred.

Graduation from a National League of Nursing accredited school of nursing. Bachelor’s degree is preferred.

BCLS certification required; unit‑specific specialty certification preferred.

Current New York State RN license.

Pre‑Employment Requirements

Completion of a pre‑employment physical examination and medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine Employee Health Services.

Electronic reference check with a minimum of three professional references.

Completion of a four‑panel drug screen.

Meet all regulatory requirements for pre‑employment screenings.

Provide copies of required New York State licenses and certificates.
