Salary: $23 to $26.30 Per Hour

Hours: 2nd shift positions primarily from 2:30pm – 11:00pm Monday through Friday during the school year (applicable shift differential)

We are seeking an energetic individual to fill the Carpenter position to support the Grounds Maintenance Team. This role is a member of the AFSCME union and reports to the Director of Property Services. Carpenter/Grounds Maintenance personnel provide a variety of carpentry, maintenance, and grounds services to meet the needs of the school district. The ideal candidate will be a team player with a positive attitude, reliable transportation, and good time management skills.

Essential Functions

Perform a range of general maintenance tasks including playground repair and inspections, painting, building, erecting, installing, repairing and assisting with grounds maintenance.

Install drywall, lay down floors, build cabinets, construct gates, and perform general construction tasks such as adding shades.

Operate commercial ground equipment such as dump trucks, plows, tractors, front‑end loaders, zero‑turn mowers, snow blowers, chainsaws, and hedge trimmers.

Operate a variety of tools, machinery, and equipment including power and hand tools used in ground maintenance such as shovels, rakes, axes, brooms, leaf blowers, and other tools.

Troubleshoot issues to determine necessary repairs.

Perform general repairs that do not require a specialized technician (e.g., repairing drywall, painting, repairing doors and other building fixtures).

Follow all safety rules, policies, and regulations. Able to work independently with minimal supervision.

Maintain accountability in maintaining assigned tools and equipment.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

Minimum Required: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Minimum Required: Demonstrated aptitude and ability to meet responsibilities outlined above.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Working knowledge: Basic principles and terminology of carpentry and maintenance and ability to solve simple problems.

General knowledge: Sufficient knowledge to perform most work in normal situations.

Thorough knowledge: Advanced knowledge to solve unusual work problems and advise on technical matters.

Comprehensive knowledge: Rarely required for this position.

Specific Skills and Abilities

Maintain a valid State Driver’s license.

Follow instructions from supervisors or senior maintenance workers.

Knowledge of general carpentry and repair.

Ability to use hand tools and power tools.

Excellent organizational and time management skills.

Adapt to changing work priorities.

Meet deadlines and schedules.

Work as part of a team.

Perform work requiring moderate to heavy labor.

Benefits

Salary: As per the Master Agreement between the Burlington Board of School Commissioners and the Property Services Employees. Hourly position paid bi‑weekly.

Benefits: Eligible on start date with 30 days to enroll in coverage. BSD Benefits.

Paid Time: Sick Time, Personal Time, Holidays, Vacation as per the Master Agreement.
