
Code Compliance Officer I

Nature of Work
The purpose of this job is to conduct independent inspections of properties for housing, nuisance, zoning, and building maintenance code violations or other assigned codes pertinent to the function of housing and property maintenance enforcement. Ensures compliance with structural, health, and safety standards, identifies violations, and issues verbal and written orders to property owners. Provides referrals to other departments when appropriate.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Conducts independent inspections of properties, housing, nuisance, and building maintenance code violations or other assigned codes
Prepares written orders citing code violations, posts violation notices and writes case reports for documentation and preparation for case billing and prepares warning letters
Prepares notice of complaint for property owner, verifies property ownership, reviews any open case files, and determines housing, nuisance, zoning and building maintenance code violations or other assigned codes
Conducts re‑inspection of code violations, makes determinations regarding case closing, extensions, and continuation of enforcement
Prepares code violation cases for court, collects evidence, photographs violations, prepares legal documents and case history information, confers with city attorney, obtains criminal warrants or issues municipal civil infraction, and testifies in court
Prepares and processes work orders for city vendor to correct code violations, inspects work completed by vendor, authorizes payment to vendor
Maintains organized case records, inspection results and prepares reports
Communicates with court officials, probation department, city attorney’s office, community agencies, neighborhood associations, tenants, property owners and general public
Attends meetings with inspections appeal board, presents status report on property violations, progress of repairs
Assists with training of compliance officers
Provides appropriate enforcement action until compliance is achieved
Performs related work as required
Minimum Training and Experience
Required Education and Experience
High school diploma (or GED equivalent)
One (1) year of code enforcement or related work experience
Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities
Required Licenses or Certifications
International Code Council Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector, or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
