The Centre offers a unique environment for nursing associates to develop their paediatric experience across a range of areas: Inpatients, Paediatric Assessment Unit, High Dependency unit, Day unit, oncology shared care services and outpatients.

Main duties of the job
As a Registered Nursing Associate on paediatrics you will be expected to deliver compassionate, safe, high quality care for children within our large unit. Our service covers specialist inpatient services such as paediatric oncology, paediatric critical care level 2, paediatric surgery, a paediatric assessment unit and an extensive children’s outpatient service. You should be enthusiastic, motivated with good interpersonal skills and able to problem‑solve and prioritise during periods of pressure. In collaboration with the multidisciplinary team, you will be required to deliver and supervise patient care for the clinical area; ensuring assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of a high standard of care. Working in conjunction with the team to deliver safe patient and family‑centred care within a challenging and changing clinical environment.
Job responsibilities
Registered Nursing Associate with current registration status with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and able to meet the revalidation requirements or working towards NMC registration
A willingness to develop knowledge and skill is essential
An ability to perform clinical skills with dexterity
Knowledge of clinical governance, policy and procedure
An understanding of evidence-based practice
IT skills which can be built upon to incorporate the use of hospital administration, information and training systems
Organisation and time management skills
Demonstrate a clear understanding of Child Protection policies and procedures
Communication, interpersonal skills and personal qualities
The ability to work cohesively with all members of the team
The ability to communicate with patients and their relatives with sensitivity and empathy
Be able to work under pressure
Be pro‑active and take initiative
Act as a good role model for others to follow
Liaison with Acute and Community Support Services
Respond to emergency situations with composure, maintaining patient safety and seeking immediate support, supporting the patient, family and other staff as required
Recognise the need to escalate the deterioration of a patient condition to the appropriate staff member
Communicate effectively within the multi-disciplinary team, wards and departments as required
Work within your scope of practice to deliver a high standard of evidence‑based care in accordance with established nursing procedures and policies
Discharge planning in conjunction with a multi‑disciplinary team
To communicate effectively with patients and carers, particularly when dealing with complex, sensitive or distressing information, in order to provide patient‑centred care, to encourage self‑management, maximise rehabilitation potential and to ensure understanding of the condition. Patients may have communication, perceptual or cognitive/understanding difficulties.
To maintain clear, accurate and concise patient records in line with departmental and professional standards and include relevant outcome measures
Maintain patient dignity and confidentiality at all times
Ensure the safe handling of valuables and property of all patients
Clinical Practice
As a Registered Nursing Associate the expectation is that you will work a mixture of days, night and weekend shifts. With adequate training, supervision and assessment, you will be able to:
Ensure clinical practice is evidence based or peer‑reviewed best practice
Develop and maintain clinical skills and knowledge necessary to deliver an evidence‑based service
With supervision and assistance take on increased responsibility recognising own limitations and seeking help appropriately
Be competent in the use of all relevant Trust IT systems including the use of electronic patient record, email, and Track‑Care
Maintain regular use of emails to keep abreast of information disseminated in the Trust
Adhere to the NMC code of practice at all times and operate within the NMC standards of proficiency for Registered Nursing Associates
Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of Accountability, responsibility and Duty of Care and work towards the provision of support and education for less experienced and non‑registered staff on the implications for practice
Qualifications and Training
Active registration with UK Nursing and Midwifery Council as a Nursing associate
Evidence of Nursing associate Foundation degree qualification
Clinical experience
Experience (through placement or employment) of working in an acute clinical environment
Experience (through placement or employment) of working within a paediatric environment
Knowledge and skills
Self‑motivated and able to prioritise own workload
Basic IT skills with knowledge of Trak Care, Electronic Patient Records and related services
Excellent presentational, communication and interpersonal skills
Able to competently and safely administer medications according to Trust policy
Able to identify own limitations of competency and undertake continuous professional development
Demonstrate clear understanding of Child Protection policies and procedures
Demonstrate knowledge of clinical audit and improvement methodology
Personal attributes
