Position Overview
A leading New York City health system is seeking a compassionate and highly skilled LMSW or LCSW to join its outpatient Neuro-Oncology team. This role supports patients and families navigating complex neurological cancers, providing psychosocial assessments, counseling, care coordination, and resource navigation throughout the continuum of care.
Working within a multidisciplinary team of neurologists, oncologists, nurses, and advanced practice providers, the social worker plays a critical role in addressing emotional, psychological, and social determinants of health to improve patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct comprehensive psychosocial assessments for patients diagnosed with neurological cancers (e.g., glioblastoma, brain tumors, metastatic CNS disease)
Provide individual, family, and group counseling to support coping, adjustment, and mental health needs
Develop and implement patient-centered care plans in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team
Offer crisis intervention and emotional support for patients and caregivers
Assist with advance care planning, goals-of-care discussions, and end-of-life support when appropriate
Coordinate referrals to community resources, including financial assistance, transportation, home care, and support services
Facilitate support groups and educational sessions for patients and caregivers
Advocate for patients' needs within the healthcare system and community
Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record (Epic preferred)
Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences and team meetings
Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited program
Active New York State LMSW or LCSW license required
Minimum 1–2 years of clinical social work experience in a healthcare or oncology setting preferred
Experience working with medically complex or oncology patient populations strongly preferred
Strong assessment, counseling, and crisis intervention skills
Knowledge of community resources and healthcare systems in NYC
Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-based environment
Preferred Qualifications
LCSW with psychotherapy experience
Prior experience in oncology, neurology, palliative care, or hospice settings
Bilingual (Spanish or other languages) a plus
