Animal Care and Research Support Specialist
Animal Care and Research Support Specialist responsible for the husbandry, handling, restraint, and health surveillance of laboratory animals. Works with all species housed at the site and supports research investigators with technical services.
Responsibilities
Provide basic husbandry, handling, restraint and health surveillance of laboratory animals in compliance with local regulatory requirements.
Maintain inventory of animal supplies and provide basic technical assistance (e.g., restraints, injections, blood collections) to support research studies.
Perform all regulatory responsibilities in compliance with applicable standards.
Observe and report on animal health, food and water consumption, appearance, and behavior.
Support basic veterinary medical treatment as prescribed by the veterinary staff.
Support cage wash equipment operations and maintenance.
Train and mentor new hires in animal husbandry and facility support duties.
Work under regulations such as the USDA Animal Welfare Act, Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, GLP, PHS Policy and/or AAALAC accreditation standards.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED.
Minimum 4 years of experience in animal care, plus relevant certifications.
Experience in a pharmaceutical setting (preferred).
Strong attention to detail.
Excellent communication skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Problem‑solving skills.
Familiarity with animal care and welfare regulations.
Experience with cage wash equipment.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
Physical/Mental Requirements
Must be able to lift 50 pounds and perform repetitive physical activities such as pushing and pulling caging, lifting bags of feed and bedding, reaching, stooping, and bending.
Must be able to work standing and lifting items above shoulder level for extended periods.
Must provide proof of measles immunity or receive measles vaccination before hire.
Work Schedule and Location
Work shift: 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM, with weekend coverage every other week. Weekend and holiday work are required. Position is on‑premises.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary range: $29.83 – $49.72 per hour, with eligibility for overtime, weekend, holiday and other pay premiums. Benefits include a 401(k) plan with matching contributions, paid vacation, holidays, personal days, paid caregiver/parental and medical leave, and comprehensive health, prescription drug, dental and vision coverage.
