The Omaha World‑Herald is seeking a versatile and decisive editor to join our newsroom in a night and weekend role, handling print production and helping guide news coverage. This position blends hands‑on copy editing with real‑time news judgment. The Night and Weekend Editor will be responsible for copy‑editing and polishing content for print publication while also serving as a point of contact for reporters working evenings and weekends. This editor should be comfortable stepping in to assign or edit stories as news develops.
The ideal candidate understands how to balance speed and accuracy, thrives on deadlines and brings a strong sense of ownership to the report when newsroom staffing is leaner.

Manage and prioritize a mix of staff and wire content and staff during evening and weekend shifts.
Work closely with print design partners to ensure a clean, compelling final product.
Serve as the primary editorial contact for reporters filing outside traditional hours.
Collaborate with reporters to shape stories and ensure strong, timely coverage, stepping in to take a hands‑on approach if needed.
Make sound, real‑time decisions on story play, urgency and presentation.
What we’re looking for
Strong editing and headline‑writing skills, with a sharp eye for detail and accuracy.
Solid news judgment and the ability to make quick decisions under deadline pressure.
Experience working with both wire and staff copy.
Strong understanding of AP style and comfort adapting to local style.
Ability to work independently while coordinating with a broader newsroom team and our design partners.
Comfort communicating with reporters and guiding coverage in real time.
Experience in a digital‑first publishing environment.
Work evenings and weekends as a core part of the role.
To apply, submit a resume, cover letter and examples of your editing work or headlines. In your cover letter, tell us how you approach deadline decision‑making and working with reporters during off‑hours.
