UNIV - Staff Scientist I - Department of Pharmacology and Immunology

Medical University of South Carolina, Orleans Estates, SC, United States

Job Description Summary
Seeking an individual, preferably with microsurgical experience, for a position in neuroimmunology for projects that encompass basic and translational research. Work in the laboratory is centered around the complement system and neuroinflammatory mechanisms. Ongoing projects involve investigating acute and chronic neuroimmune responses occurring after stroke or after different types of traumatic brain injury, including the long‑term neurodegenerative sequalae of injury. For this position, work will be focused on mouse models of stroke and traumatic brain injury. Ideally, the candidate will have experience with the murine middle cerebral artery occlusion model, although training can be provided. Other aspects of the project will include high‑resolution and confocal microscopy, cellular and molecular immune profile analysis, therapeutic evaluation of drugs, and detailed assessments of motor and cognitive functions. The laboratory is also developing novel transgenic animals for mechanistic studies and is involved in the development (and commercialization) of novel therapeutic approaches.

Responsibilities

Participate in a project related to the described work, including performing surgical procedures, preparing sections from mouse brains, processing for histology and immune‑microscopy, performing various microscopy techniques, and evaluating mice via behavioral tasks.

Conduct high‑dimensional analyses of post‑injury immune landscape, analyze and interpret data, and use image analysis software to generate computer images. Determine behavioral outcomes in terms of pathophysiological findings.

Collaborate with other lab personnel on related projects, and participate in lab meetings and project‑specific meetings.

Maintain current lab notebooks and archives, assist with writing manuscripts and grants, and stay up to date with relevant literature.

Qualifications

A Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent with two years postdoctoral experience and evidence of scholarly activity (at least five first‑author publications).

Preferred: Ph.D. degree in biology or a related natural, life, or health‑care science; at least two years postdoctoral experience.

Experience with mouse models of stroke and traumatic brain injury, especially the middle cerebral artery occlusion model.

Proficiency in high‑resolution and confocal microscopy, cellular and molecular immune profiling, and behavioral assessment of mice.

Ability to perform surgical procedures and conduct complex imaging and data analysis.

Physical Requirements

Perform job functions in an upright position continuously for 6‑8 hours per shift.

Operate in a seated position continuously for 6‑8 hours per shift.

Walk or move around the laboratory frequently during 2‑6 hour periods.

Climb stairs infrequently.

Work indoors continuously.

Work in cold temperature extremes; ability to withstand spot coolers.

Bend and twist at the waist frequently.

Pinch, use both hands/arms, and perform repetitive motions with hands/wrists/elbows and shoulders continuously.

Use both legs continuously and reach in all directions.

Lift and carry up to 30 lbs. unassisted frequently; lift from floor to 72 inches and back.

Maintain 20/40 vision, hearing, and olfactory acuity with correction, as well as depth perception and peripheral vision.

Perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements.

Qualified physically for respirator use as determined by medical personnel.

Work alone in isolated areas such as darkrooms.

Obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Computer literacy and ability to learn new tools, equipment, and processes.

Work rotating shifts and overtime as required.

Learn and use new processes, tools, and equipment as required.
