Overview
The Standardized Patient Program at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center Bethesda (WRNMMCB) is part of the Department of Simulation. The Standardized/Simulated Patient (SP) is a coached individual who role plays case scenarios designed by faculty to teach or test clinical or related skills. These activities may occur in various settings, using one‑way glass or video recording. Sometimes the SP may be a Standardized Participant, such as a parent or other family member, or another medical provider the learner must interact with.

Standardized Patient Educator (SPE) Role
The SPE helps recruit and train individuals to portray roles, collects SP event logs for payroll processing, and assists faculty with case development. The SPE serves as an institutional resource for other healthcare programs at WRNMMCB.

Training Platform Description & Objectives
Training primarily occurs in person. Virtual platforms are used for difficult conversations during weather events or over the telephone to mimic real life. The aim is to practice or demonstrate required core competencies and other skills in a realistic clinical environment without using actual patients under faculty observation.

Key Deliverables and Milestones

Recruit and schedule SPs in accordance with recruiting requirements outlined in objective and case materials.

Train SPs to perform as standardized/simulated patients using case materials and scripts.

Ensure SPs are well trained on simulation activity objectives, role nuances, and pertinent case details.

Maintain complete and accurate documentation for payroll and budgeting purposes.

Ensure SPs have reliable internet connections and devices with audio/video capabilities.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Recruit, train, and supervise SPs.

Identify, screen, interview, and maintain a cohort of SPs reflective of diversity.

Maintain up-to-date documentation of SP roster including contact information, demographics, and unique findings.

Schedule SPs in accordance with curricular requirements of simulation activities.

Create training resources to supplement SP training.

Educate and prepare SPs to deliver accurate, consistent, and high‑quality clinical education through role portrayal, feedback, and assessment checklists.

Ensure safe working conditions in activity design, considering physical, cognitive, and psychological challenges.

Monitor the quality of SP case portrayal, provide feedback, and engage in continuous quality assurance and improvement.

Monitor the quality of feedback delivered to learners, ensuring appropriateness.

Monitor assessment checklists for accuracy and inter‑rater reliability.

Oversee SPs during educational and assessment events.

Maintain records and documentation of training, resources, and materials.

Curriculum Development

Collaborate with faculty subject matter experts and simulation center staff to develop instructional methods and evaluation strategies.

Ensure simulation instructional design meets purpose.

Contribute to the development of case materials and supporting documents (pre‑briefing, debriefing, objectives, scenarios, assessment tools).

Collaborate on curricular improvements to optimize learning.

Maintain up‑to‑date records and documentation of cases and case materials.

Event Coordination and Execution

Coordinate logistics with other simulation center team members to ensure smooth operation.

Coordinate with the Audio‑Visual Specialist to become proficient with department equipment for monitoring and recording events.

Assist with execution of events utilizing SPs.

Assist with application of Moulage.

Program Management

Manage a diverse portfolio of SP‑based educational and assessment projects.

Follow and adhere to Association of Standardized Patient Educators (ASPE) Standards of Best Practices.

Ensure quality management practices (planning, assurance, control, improvement).

Gather and analyze feedback from SPs, learners, faculty, and other users.

Assist in development of PI/research projects (data collection, analysis, reporting, dissemination, manuscript preparation).

Maintain accurate budget documentation and assist with budget management.

Complete, submit, and manage documentation for SP pay in accordance with policies and vendor requirements.

Follow business processes as outlined by the Department of Simulation.

Assist with Simulation Education and Operations as assigned.

Qualifications

Read, write, speak, and understand English fluently.

U.S. citizen.

Verified Master’s level education in the humanities, education, or health (preferred).

Verified experience with simulation‑based education involving Standardized Patients for high‑stakes events (OSCE, communication‑based simulations).

Proficiency in developing SP training materials and training individuals in case portrayal and feedback.

Proficiency in all levels of SP management: recruiting, case development, training, quality assurance, budgeting.

Expert knowledge of adult learning theories and SP methodology.

Working knowledge of ASPE Standards of Best Practices.

Ability to coordinate diverse simulation‑based training events for all levels of medical and healthcare learners.

Proficient with microprocessor‑related skills and Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook).

Working knowledge of audio‑visual and data recording software.

Expert customer service skills.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Strong interpersonal, leadership, and organizational skills.

Skills in creating and delivering presentations to large groups.
