Position Description
The Medical Surgical Licensed Practical or Vocational Nurse (LPN or LVN) holds shift accountability for providing delegated aspects of direct patient care under the direction of a Registered Nurse. They make decisions based on education, experience, State Board of Nursing rules, and hospital policies.
The LPN/LVN demonstrates critical thinking, scientific judgment, and leadership in anticipating and planning for safe care delivery. They maintain clinical competencies through continuing education, delegate patient care priorities according to staffing education and experience, and provide direction and supervision of assigned personnel. Aspects of care may include:
Physical examination and data collection
Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
Education
Medication administration
Peripheral IV therapy
Discharge planning
Implementation of physician orders
Documentation
Requirements
BLS, NIHSS, IV Certificate
