Position Overview
Start the next chapter of your Nursing Career! The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections is actively seeking devoted and passionate Registered Nurses. As a Corrections Nurse, you will provide daily nursing care for offenders and support safe and effective health operations within the institution. You will handle assessments, treatments, medication support, and health education that help maintain a stable and healthy environment.

Responsibilities

Conduct health assessments, identify concerns, and make nursing diagnoses that guide proper care.

Administer medications, monitor compliance, and observe how treatments are working.

Provide ordered treatments, assist with examinations, and support daily living needs for assigned individuals.

Update electronic health records, review charts, and prepare documentation for transfers or releases.

Teach health practices to staff and offenders and reinforce information that supports safe behavior.

Maintain readiness for inspections and follow all required infection control and quality procedures.

Work Hours and Additional Information

Full‑time employment.

Three work shifts cover the facility 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

1st shift: 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM; 2nd shift: 2:00 PM – 10:30 PM; 3rd shift: 10:00 PM – 6:30 AM.

Work hours to be determined; alternative work schedules may be available depending on operational needs.

This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.

Telework is not an option.

Starting annual salary for new employees in Pennsylvania is $88,130.00 (before taxes).

Qualifications

Active authorization to practice as a Registered Nurse in Pennsylvania.

All employees with an active temporary practice permit must obtain licensure within one year as defined by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.

PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.

If within 60 days of graduating from an approved nursing school, you may apply; proof of a current, valid PA temporary practice permit or PA Registered Nurse license is required.

Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.

Ability to perform essential job functions.

Pass background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.

Veteran Preference

Pennsylvania law (51 Pa. C.S. § 7103) provides employment preference for qualified veterans for appointment to many state and local government jobs.
