Overview
Under supervision of the Supervisor of Anatomic Pathology and direction from Pathologists and Cytotechnologists, receives and processes cytology and histology specimens for the diagnosis of cancer and other diseases. Performs clerical and receiving functions associated with the timely, accurate, reproducible reporting of results for cytology and histology specimens. Responsible for specimen accessioning and preparation including but not limited to fine needle aspirations, WANG procedure, ThinPrep, and body fluid specimens for direct smears, cytospin, staining, and/or cell block preparation. Cytology specimen preparation includes assisting the PA or Pathologist at the time of grossing, monitoring decalcification of tissues, processing bone marrow specimens, recording cassette numbers and special processing instructions, and loading the tissue processor. Performs rapid diagnosis procedures including frozen sectioning of tissue specimens. Also performs clerical functions, sanitation of preparation areas, and related duties to assist the pathologists and cytotechnologists with the production of high quality slides. Performs routine histologic procedures including cutting and staining patient samples.

Responsibilities

Receive and process cytology and histology specimens for diagnosis.

Perform specimen accessioning and preparation, including fine needle aspirations, ThinPrep, and body fluids for smears, cytospin, staining, and cell block preparation.

Assist pathologists or cytotechnologists at grossing, monitor decalcification, process bone marrow specimens, record cassette numbers, and follow special processing instructions.

Load the tissue processor and ensure timely, accurate reporting of results.

Perform rapid diagnosis procedures including frozen sectioning of tissue specimens.

Maintain sanitation of preparation areas and perform related clerical tasks to support high-quality slide production.

Perform routine histologic procedures including cutting and staining of patient samples.

Education
Education – High school degree or equivalent.

Experience
Experience – Two or more years of experience in an anatomic pathology department preferred.

Licensure/Certification – N/A

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Basic computer literacy; experience with a laboratory information system preferred (EPIC experience highly preferred).

Knowledge of basic medical terminology.

Ability to prioritize duties and communicate with hospital/laboratory staff to resolve issues and provide optimal patient care.
