Overview
Registered Nurse (RN) – Exclusive opportunity for current Alabama Department of Corrections (AL DOC) employees.

Responsibilities

Perform initial health screenings and physical assessments of newly detained individuals.

Monitor and document patient health, including vital signs and medical histories.

Provide direct patient care, triage, assess patient needs, develop care plans, and coordinate services.

Manage acute and chronic conditions such as asthma, hypertension, and diabetes.

Respond to medical emergencies, provide first aid, and ensure timely transport to appropriate healthcare facilities.

Educate patients on preventative care, healthy lifestyle choices, and substance abuse prevention.

Understand and adhere to correctional facility security protocols, working closely with correctional officers and other healthcare professionals to ensure patient safety.

Maintain accurate medical records, document treatment plans, and report relevant information.

Qualifications

Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse license in the state of Alabama.

Active BLS CPR certification (AHA preferred).

Knowledge of nursing practice principles, occupational health and safety standards, infectious disease management, healthcare laws and regulations applicable to direct health care services.

Excellent communication, organizational, and problem‑solving skills.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Flexible schedule and willingness to work overtime when needed.

Competency in interacting effectively with patients from diverse backgrounds, including those with mental health or substance‑abuse issues.

Commitment to maintaining confidentiality, professionalism, and adherence to a Code of Conduct and all facility correctional healthcare policies, procedures, and legal requirements.

Successful completion of the facility's criminal background check and drug screening.

Physical Capabilities
Must be able to stand for long periods, lift and move patients up to 50 pounds, bend, squat, reach, push, pull, walk significant distances, and perform physically demanding tasks such as CPR, while maintaining good balance and endurance throughout a shift.
