
Licensed Practical Nurse - SCI Mercer

As a Licensed Practical Nurse for the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, you will be part of a dedicated team that provides essential care to people in need. This position offers a meaningful way to support the well‑being of inmates at the State Correctional Institution in Mercer while strengthening your clinical skills. You will work in a setting where teamwork, respect, and responsibility guide every action.
This position supports the daily medical needs of inmates by carrying out essential nursing responsibilities and assisting in the delivery of quality care. As a Licensed Practical Nurse, you will perform the following duties:
Nursing Support:
Provide basic nursing tasks such as taking vital signs, giving medications, and carrying out routine treatments.
Inmate Observation:
Monitor inmate behavior and report physical or emotional changes to clinical staff.
Emergency Response:
Assist in medical emergencies by delivering first aid, CPR, or other urgent support when needed.
Record Management:
Maintain electronic health records and assist with reports for transfers, releases, and daily documentation.
Medication Handling:
Prepare, administer, and document medications in line with clinical orders and safety procedures.
Supply Maintenance:
Sterilize equipment, manage inventory, and ensure treatment areas remain stocked.
Work Schedule and Additional Information
Full‑time employment, 40 hours per week.
Work hours will be discussed during the interview. Alternative work schedules may be available, depending on operational needs.
The Department of Corrections maintains three work shifts that cover the facility 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Work hours will be determined from the following shifts:
2nd shift: 2:00 PM to 10:30 PM.
3rd shift: 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM.
This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non‑negotiable.
QUALIFICATIONS
Active authorization to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in Pennsylvania.
All employees possessing an active temporary practice permit must obtain licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse within one year as defined by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.
Other Requirements
PA residency requirement is waived for this title.
If you are within 60 days of completing a licensed practical nursing program approved by the State Board of Nursing, you are eligible to apply for this posting. At the time of appointment to a position, you must show proof of possession of a current, valid PA temporary practice permit or PA Licensed Practical Nurse license.
Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
You must be able to perform essential job functions.
