Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Education is hiring for a Health & Family Life Specialist to provide leadership and oversight for creating a comprehensive and effective technical assistance infrastructure that enhances the capacity of teachers and program leaders by providing ongoing support and highly complex analytical outreach and consultation for improving the quality and effectiveness of K12 Family Life and Health Education instruction across the Commonwealth.

The Health & Family Life Specialist would be expected to fulfill the following duties:

Developing and implementing K12 Family Life and Health Education projects, innovative activities, and professional development that impact statewide achievement of students.

Reviewing, developing, organizing, implementing, correlating, and evaluating health and family life education curricular resources, data, and assessment materials.

Supporting the implementation and enhancement of adapted education programs, ensuring that all students, including those with disabilities, receive comprehensive and inclusive health and wellness education.

Facilitating the development and interpretation of policies and procedures that impact health and family life education programs and student learning.

Serving as a member of the team to provide collaborative services across all subject areas related to STEM education.

Minimum Qualifications

Comprehensive knowledge of family life and health education standards, Va Code, and Board of Education requirements.

Considerable knowledge of evidence-based pedagogical approaches, current trends, research, and best practices in health and family life education.

Considerable knowledge of the Virginia Standards of Learning review process, local school division responsibilities, state and local government policies, and state agency functions.

Considerable experience delivering professional development and managing and scaling projects.

Considerable knowledge of resource allocation, budgets, grant writing and management.

Highly developed interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Ability to communicate clearly, to manage time and workload, adjust work schedules to meet new or emerging priorities, meet schedules consistently, forecast developing trends, and work collaboratively with other agencies and lead staff on complex initiatives.

Skills in utilizing computer software for word processing, graphical presentation, databases, spreadsheets, and other technologies to complete assigned responsibilities.

Ability to define problems and apply problem-solving techniques to complex educational issues related to health science and STEM education; to apply research methods; to work effectively with support staff and teams of professionals; to manage the completion of multiple assignments and/or projects with critical deadlines; and to coordinate, critique, and edit work products of a diverse staff of technical and professional experts.

Recognized as an expert in health and family life education.

Additional Considerations

Graduation from an accredited college or university with an undergraduate degree in K12 health education, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. An advanced degree in curriculum and instruction, education leadership, school counseling, or a related field is preferred.

Considerable experience working with students and parents at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

Considerable expertise in Health and Family Life instruction and experience with the review process for the Va Standards of Learning.

Experience in developing health and family life curriculum, making cross-curricular connections and long-range program planning is desirable.

Experiences in delivering staff development for teachers, working with professional organizations, and promoting staff wellness initiatives and health education life skills programming for local school divisions is desired.
