The Pharmacy Tech Supervisor supervises inpatient and/or ambulatory Pharmacy Technicians and provides oversight for pharmacy services. This position supports Pharmacy Technician development through new‑staff orientation, training, and competencies, and ensures an efficient distributive process of medications throughout the institution while proactively addressing medication safety issues.
The Pharmacy Tech Supervisor provides technical support, as needed, to the Department of Pharmacy Services, such as the implementation, optimization, oversight, support, and maintenance coordination of all new and existing automated dispensing system equipment. This job assists with expenses and revenue budgets, as applicable, and meets customer service objectives. The job also ensures and maintains compliance with all legal, regulatory, and accreditation requirements.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire
Current certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)
Current licensure with the Virginia State Board of Pharmacy
Clean criminal record: no felony conviction; no drug or pharmacy‑related convictions, including misdemeanors; no denial, suspension, revocation, or restriction of registration or licensure by any State Board of Pharmacy
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Continued Employment
Current certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)
Current licensure with the Virginia State Board of Pharmacy
Experience Required
Minimum of three (3) years of previous work experience as a Certified Pharmacy Technician
Previous experience in a lead role
Experience Preferred
Two (2) or more years of supervisory experience
Education/Training Required
High School Diploma or equivalent
Education/Training Preferred
Bachelors of Science degree from an accredited academic program
Prior knowledge and experience with automated dispensing systems
Prior knowledge and experience with clinical information systems
Two or more years of hospital experience (inpatient or ambulatory) as a Nationally‑Certified Pharmacy Technician
Independent Actions Required
Provides leadership to meet staffing and service requirements of an active, busy pharmacy
Responds to patient service and other supervisory issues independently
Hires, disciplines, and makes performance review decisions
Identifies equipment and operational problems, taking initiative to resolve while appropriately transitioning to a pharmacist or pharmacy manager as appropriate
Interacts with other health care practitioners in a multidisciplinary environment
Provides support and leadership for the planning, optimization, implementation, support, and maintenance of pharmacy automation systems, as applicable
Serves as the liaison for vendor software
Supervisory Responsibilities (if applicable)
Handles full range of supervisor responsibilities including hiring, orienting, evaluating, disciplining and providing learning opportunities
Coordinates recruitment and orientation of all technicians as well as the training and education of technician staff
Supports staff development activities
Makes recommendations for development activities and programs
Develops competency‑based staff assessment standards and ensures they are met
Addresses performance issues as they occur
Additional Position Requirements
May be involved in coaching, both within the Pharmacy Department and in other areas of the hospital
May assist with other items as needed
Physical Requirements
Lifting 20-50 lbs.
Prolonged standing, sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance)
Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, logical thinking
