The City of Wausau is hiring a
Fleet Mechanic (Municipal Fleet Technician)
to maintain and repair the vehicles and equipment that keep our community moving. From dump trucks and plows to emergency vehicles and heavy equipment—your work keeps essential services operating every day.

Quick Facts About This Position
$26.12/hour or higher DOQ + $1.45/hour shift differential
$2,000 Hiring Bonus
2nd Shift: Monday–Friday, 2:30 PM – 10:30 PM
Overtime paid after 8 hours/day
Paid CDL Training (covered and wages paid during training)
Excellent benefits + WRS pension
Responsibilities
Perform inspection, diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance
Troubleshoot engines, hydraulics, electrical, and computerized systems
Repair and replace components across a wide range of equipment
Perform welding and fabrication as needed
Upfit new equipment for City departments
Complete work orders and maintain repair records
Provide roadside service when needed
Respond to emergency situations and on‑call needs
Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent
Formal training OR at least 1 year of experience in automotive, diesel, or heavy equipment repair
Valid Driver’s License
AND:
Ability to pass CDL written exam within 30 days
Ability to obtain Class A CDL (no air brake restrictions) within 9 months
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with diesel engines and heavy equipment
CDL Class A with N endorsement
Experience with hydraulics, electrical systems, or diagnostics
Welding and fabrication experience
