
Maintenance Worker I

Under close supervision, performs a variety of manual and semi‑skilled labor tasks in the maintenance of streets, right‑of‑ways; and performs other related duties. Works under close supervision of the Street Maintenance Supervisor; does not exercise supervisory responsibility.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the entry level class in the Maintenance Worker series. Positions at this level perform routine and less complex maintenance duties are not expected to function with the same amount of job knowledge or skill level as positions allocated to the higher Maintenance Worker II level. Work is closely supervised. As experience is acquired, the employee performs with increasing skills and responsibility and is expected to be performing at the “II” or journey level within the prescribed time frame. Advancement to the “II” level is based on demonstrated proficiency in performing the full range of assigned duties, possession of required licenses or certifications, and is at the discretion of higher level supervisory or management staff.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following essential functions are those that are critical, integral, necessary, crucial, primary and fundamental to the job. Incumbents who possess the requisite skill, experience, education, and other job‑related requirements of a position are expected to perform the essential functions of the job with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Operates a variety of trucks, vehicles and job‑related equipment and tools such as backhoes, loaders, compressors, demolition equipment, compaction equipment, material mixers, and saws; drives pick‑up trucks and delivers materials to work sites.
Assist in street, alley, and right of way maintenance; maintenance and repair tasks including but not limited to hot and cold asphalt repairs, curb and gutter and sidewalk repair, mixed granite hole patching, and tree trimming assistance, removal and planting, sewer system assistance, mixes, pours, and spreads concrete, asphalt, sand, and gravel.
Assist with graffiti removal throughout the city as needed.
Maintains and assists other crewmembers with cleaning vehicles, equipment and tools.
Assists in the placement and removal of work site traffic control per the Manual for Uniform Traffic Control Devices and Work Area Traffic Control Handbook.
Assists in the assembly and erection of work site protection signs and markers and acts as flagman as necessary.
Uses and maintains vehicles, tools and equipment.
Observes standard operating procedures and safety practices; supports and actively participates in the City’s safety programs.
Responds to emergency calls within specified time when participating in the emergency standby program.
Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Possession of a High School diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent; AND one (1) year of related general construction or maintenance experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Licenses or Certifications
Must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License.
Required Knowledge Of
City organization, operations, policies and procedures.
Principles and practices of street, stormwater collection systems construction, maintenance, repair and safety practices including equipment related maintenance.
State and federal environmental protection codes and regulations; Cal OSHA regulations.
Common hand and power tools.
Required Skills In
Reading, interpreting, comprehending and following basic instructions.
Working flexible hours or on‑call schedule.
Human relations and communicating effectively with customers.
Verbal and written communications.
Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
Physical Demands / Work Environment
Work is primarily performed in outdoor environments with considerable time spent in moderate temperatures (above 80 degrees), with exposure to the elements including heavy rain.
Work requires reaching, bending, lifting (up to 50 lbs.), driving, pushing, crawling, walking and climbing (more than 12 feet); working below ground and in confined spaces.
Good near vision, far vision and color perception is required.
May be exposed to wet surfaces, minor amounts of dust and on occasion loud noises.
Work may involve exposure to moving traffic, dangerous machinery, infectious diseases and hazardous chemicals.
Must be able to work during weekdays, weekends, and holidays on any assigned shift.
Sufficient body flexibility, mobility, stamina and balance, manual dexterity, and physical reflexes to permit employee to perform job responsibilities and operate a variety of power and hand tools safely.
