Position Overview
El Dorado County is committed to recruiting qualified employees to provide legal representation to individuals charged with criminal offenses who cannot afford private counsel. The Public Defender’s Office delivers quality legal services in a compassionate and professional manner, ensuring constitutional balance in the county's legal system.
Responsibilities
Perform the full range of routine to complex legal activities.
Represent the County in moderate to high‑profile and multi‑jurisdictional legal matters, including trials, hearings, and appeals with far‑reaching implications.
Lead negotiations, mediation, and resolution of cases with significant financial, operational, or policy impacts.
Serve as a subject‑matter expert and provide technical direction on specialized legal projects, offering mentorship and strategic oversight.
Draft and review legal documents.
Qualifications
Doctorate (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from an accredited law school.
Active membership in the California State Bar.
Five (5) years of increasingly responsible professional legal experience as a licensed practicing attorney, preferably with demonstrated expertise in public defense or related area.
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California or Nevada Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record.
Benefits and Incentives
Up to $6,000 to be paid in equal installments for the first twenty‑six consecutive bi‑weekly pay periods.
Fixed amount of additional vacation leave accrued in equal installments in each of the first twenty‑six consecutive bi‑weekly pay periods of employment.
Up to $6,000 relocation expense reimbursement for moving expenses for the candidate’s household, including pets, when the primary residence is more than one hundred miles from the assigned work location.
*Recruitment incentive and relocation expense reimbursement eligibility and administration are subject to the County of El Dorado Personnel Rules. Current County of El Dorado Employees are not eligible to receive recruitment incentives or reimbursement.
*Employees residing in the Tahoe basin may be eligible to a Tahoe differential up to $101.53, paid twenty‑four benefit pay periods, and a geographical differential up to $200.00, paid twenty‑four pay periods per year.
