
LICENSED BEHAVIORAL HEALTH THERAPIST, OUTPATIENT

Shift: 8AM – 4PM
Pay Range: $43.507 – $52.469 per hour
Salary is commensurate with years of experience indicated at time of application submittal. Experience not disclosed or documented at the time of application will not be considered for initial step placement.
Job Summary
The Licensed Behavioral Health Therapist, Outpatient will provide behavioral health assessment, determine safety, provide supportive psychotherapy, and recommend outpatient treatment under the direction of the ambulatory provider. Specifically, the Licensed Behavioral Health Therapist, Outpatient will provide initial psychiatric consultations, crisis management, therapeutic support, and psychotherapy for patients in all inpatient, outpatient, and emergency settings for Cook County Health (CCH).
Typical Duties
Supports and closely coordinates mental health care with the patient’s provider and, when appropriate, other treating mental health providers.
Screens and assesses patients for common mental health and substance abuse disorders.
Monitors patients (in person or by telephone) for changes in clinical symptoms and treatment side effects or complications.
Supports psychotropic medication management prescribed by patients’ providers, focusing on treatment adherence, side effects, other complications, and effectiveness of treatment.
Provides brief interventions using evidence-based techniques such as Behavioral Activation, Problem‑Solving Treatment, Motivational Interviewing, or other treatments appropriate for primary care settings.
Participates in regularly scheduled (usually weekly) caseload consultation with the Psychiatric Consultant and communicates resulting treatment recommendations to the patient’s provider. Consultations focus on patients new to treatment or who are not improving as expected.
Mentors staff on clinical cases and professional development.
Facilitates treatment plan changes for patients who are not improving as expected in consultation with the provider and the Psychiatric Consultant; may include changes in medications or psychosocial treatments or appropriate referrals for additional services.
Assesses information, applies critical thinking to determine course of action, and relays this information to patients, families, and clinical staff in a professional and compassionate manner.
Identifies professional goals and enhances job‑related skills through staff development activities. Remains current on trends in clinical theory and evidence‑based practice. Stays abreast of policies and procedures, pertaining to crisis/behavioral health acts accordingly.
Actively participates in team activities, in the larger hospital and in the community in ways that make a positive contribution to team operations. Maintains appropriate professional boundaries with all staff, trainees, and patients at all times.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree from an accredited college or university focused on clinical concentration on mental health.
License in Clinical Social Work (LCSW), License Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC), Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFP) in the State of Illinois or ability to obtain license within two (2) weeks prior to starting employment.
Two (2) years of experience performing individual therapy to individuals who have mental illness in a mental health setting, including experience gained during training/internship.
Experience using evidence‑based counseling techniques such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Problem‑Solving Therapy (PST).
Eligibility to successfully complete credentialing.
Preferred Qualifications
Certification as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC).
Experience working with patients who have co‑occurring mental health, substance abuse, and physical health problems.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
Knowledge of psychopharmacology for common mental health disorders.
Skill in directing and evaluating the professional and administrative aspects of case management services.
Skill in conducting bi‑psychosocial interviews.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting.
Ability to plan, direct and evaluate the professional and administrative aspects of social work services.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with a wide variety of lay and professional individuals and mentally ill patients.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient‑related materials in compliance with HIPAA requirements.
Willingness and ability to provide psychiatric consultations and care to all Cook County Health and Hospitals System sites.
Experience documenting in an EMR.
Ability to effectively apply CPT codes and bill for clinical services.
Physical and Environmental Demands
This position functions within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for adherence to all hospital and department‑specific safety requirements. This includes but is not limited to compliance with personal protective equipment requirements, hand washing and sanitizing practices, compliance with department‑specific engineering and work practice controls, and any other work area safety precautions as specified by hospital‑wide policy and departmental procedures.
Veteran Preference
Preference is given to honorably discharged Veterans who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States for not less than six (6) months of continuous service. Veterans must meet the minimum qualifications, identify themselves as Veterans on the employment application, and provide original applicable discharge papers or an ID card indicating veteran status at time of interview.
