
Registered Nurse II - Mother Baby Unit

Job Summary
Mother Baby/Antepartum is a twenty-nine (29)-bed unit located on the 4th floor plus seven additional couplet care rooms on the 5th floor of the Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital / Pearl Tourville Women’s Pavilion. The unit provides GYN, postpartum, well-newborn, and antepartum care to patients with normal and high risk pregnancies and fetal demises in a family centered environment. Mother-baby couplet nursing is the primary model of care. Family participation is encouraged, and patient teaching is individualized according to the assessed knowledge deficits. The normal newborn procedural area is located on the fourth floor of the main hospital for normal newborns not eligible for rooming in. Staffing mix includes Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Patient Care Technicians, and Unit Secretaries.
Responsibilities
Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse II provides individualized, goal-directed patient care to families and patients at the competent level utilizing the principles and practices of the nursing process; delivers safe and effective care and interacts with other members of the health care team to achieve desired results. Provides nursing care to patients using the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation). Directs and leads other assigned team members and collaborates with multidisciplinary team members to provide age/developmentally appropriate care in accordance with nursing standards of care and practice. Provides patient/family centered care using the nursing process and focusing on the physical, emotional, spiritual, cultural, religious, and environmental needs. Provides assessment, development of nursing diagnoses, outcome identification, planning, implementation of interventions, coordination of care, health teaching and promotion and evaluation of goals and interventions consistent with the policies of MUSC. Maintains a safe, therapeutic, and healing environment through ensuring patient privacy and responsive, respectful, accepting, and professional behavior. Demonstrates the ability to function in a professional setting through active participation in a professional practice model. Participation in shared governance, adherence to standards of care, participation in peer review and professional development promoting leadership and clinical excellence, effective team skills, autonomous practice and acknowledgement of accountability for actions and critical thinking. Coordinates the effective and efficient delivery of patient care services through the application of care management principles. Identifies clinical priorities and initiates action to improve patient outcomes.
Minimum Training and Education
Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred. RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of the RN hire or reclassification date. A minimum of one year of work experience as a registered nurse is required.
Required Licensure, Certifications and Registrations
Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or an AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
Physical and Mental Requirements
Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting or walking continuously. Ability to climb stairs, work indoors, work outside in temperature extremes, work from elevated areas, work in confined/cramped spaces, perform job functions from kneeling positions, bend and twist at the waist, squat, perform "pinching" operations, perform gross motor activities with fingers and hands, perform firm grasping and fine manipulation with fingers and hands, reach overhead or in all directions, lift and carry 50 lbs. unassisted, lift/lower objects 50 lbs. from/to floor from/to 36 inches unassisted, lift from 36" to overhead 25 lbs., exert up to 50 lbs. of force as needed for patient transfer, maintain 20/40 vision, recognize objects close at hand or at a distance, match or discriminate between colors, determine distance/relationship between objects with depth perception, have good peripheral vision, maintain hearing acuity, deal effectively with stressful situations, work rotating shifts, overtime as required, work in a latex safe environment, maintain tactile sensory functions. Selected positions may require maintaining good olfactory sensory function or respirator qualification.
