General Description
The police officer position is responsible for providing security for the college and its personal property through crime prevention activities, patrol, thorough investigation of reported and suspected criminal activity, and enforcement of state laws. This is accomplished through patrol efforts, potential shift rotation, public interaction in a fair and impartial manner, and enforcement of Commonwealth laws and regulations of Northern Virginia Community College and VCCS.
Duties and Tasks
Patrol, providing protection/safety and preventing crime.
Investigate criminal activity, traffic and personal injury accidents and other complaints.
Enforce state traffic laws and promote traffic safety.
Option 5 Eligibility
Must have at least 3 years (36 months) continuous law enforcement experience commensurate with a Virginia law enforcement officer.
Be out of law enforcement employment for less than 24 months.
Must be in good standing with former employers.
Must meet all requirements of 15.2-1705 Code of Virginia.
Must be able to pass a fingerprint-based criminal background check.
In-State Certified Candidates Eligibility
If previously certified in Virginia and out of such employment less than 24 months, must be current on in-service training within 120 days of hire to be reinstated without completing a basic academy.
If previously certified law enforcement officer has been out of such employment for more than 24 months, the Agency can request an exemption from the Virginia Compulsory Minimum Training Standards by submitting an Application for Exemption from the Virginia Compulsory Minimum Training Standards (DCJS Form W-2).
Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

Ability to demonstrate an understanding of Virginia Commonwealth laws, local ordinances, and College policies.
Must meet physical and mental job demands.
Must have completed Virginia DCJS academy and certification.
Ability to follow instructions.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Good computer skills.
Ability to testify in court proceedings.
Qualify to operate a state vehicle.
Minimum Work Experience
Must be 21 years of age.
Must be a United States citizen.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Successfully pass background investigation.
Licensed driver with a demonstrated safe driving record.
Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services or qualify for the Option 5 Lateral program.
