Job Summary
The Inpatient Rehabilitation Speech‑Language Pathologist provides comprehensive assessment, treatment, and education for patients with communication, cognitive, and swallowing disorders following illness or injury.

Experience and Education
Required

Education

Master’s Degree from an accredited program in Speech Pathology

PhD from an accredited program in Speech Pathology

Licenses and Certifications

(SLPL) Speech Language Pathology License to practice in Texas; intern license (Clinical Fellowship Year) also accepted upon hire.

Active CPR upon hire.

(BLS) Basic Life Support course accredited by the AHA or ARC required upon hire.

Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) issued by ASHA required upon hire.

Preferred

Education

New graduates are welcome to apply with an intern license in Speech Language Pathology from the Texas State Board of Examiners in Speech Language and Audiology.

Job Duties

Requires prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking. Lifts, positions, pushes and/or transfers patients; lifts supplies/equipment as needed.

Has general patient care skills and demonstrates knowledge of therapeutic principles, good clinical judgement, and patient safety while maximizing treatment potential. Passes competency reviews.

Adheres to all policies and procedures related to safety, infection control, and corporate compliance, including personal demeanor, appearance, and hygiene.

Maintains patient confidentiality per University Medical Center Policy.

Completes speech therapy evaluations—reviews history, physical, subjective complaints; uses proper testing procedures; identifies and records problem areas; projects realistic goals; designs treatment plans; documents progress accurately and timely.

Prepares for patient discharge efficiently, including accurate equipment needs submission.

Works independently and in a team‑oriented manner, fostering teamwork, communication, and collaboration. Volunteers assistance with coverage and tasks as needed.

Owns problem‑solving responsibilities effectively to patient satisfaction.

Organizes patient treatment and unscheduled time efficiently.

Demonstrates basic computer knowledge.

Shows openness to change, new ideas, and learning; adapts to changes and fluctuating workload; prioritizes assignments; maintains control of emotions and body language.

Exhibits a positive attitude toward the hospital, management decisions, and resource usage with financial responsibility.

Provides constructive feedback on system or process failures and participates in resolution proactively.

Responds promptly and communicates concisely and positively to all reasonable requests.

Assists in on‑job training and education of therapy technicians, students, and/or nursing staff.

Performs other related duties as assigned. Accepts additional responsibility as appropriate.
