
Mental Health Technician (Residential)

Responsibilities
Mental Health Technician (MHT) – Full time.
Located in Danville, Virginia, The Hughes Center is a highly‑structured psychiatric residential treatment facility for youth ages 10 to 22 with neurodevelopmental disorders. The facility provides individualized and holistic care, multidisciplinary evaluations, and evidence‑based treatment and educational interventions to increase each youth’s functional independence. The MHT assists in direct care and management of residents, providing supervision, safety, crisis management, documentation, and positive behavioral strategies. The role may involve personal care support for activities of daily living as needed.
Shift Schedule
1st Shift: 7:00 am‑3:00 pm
2nd Shift: 3:00 pm‑11:00 pm
3rd Shift: 11:00 pm‑7:00 am
Job Description & Essential Duties
Provide direction, examples, and demonstration of daily living skills to residents of varying ability levels.
Offer positive intervention, limit‑setting, response, problem‑solving, and guidance as required.
Guide residents in developing acceptable habits and attitudes by consistently and fairly implementing the behavioral program and emphasizing good choices and positive interactions.
Maintain clean and sanitary living and working areas, ensuring compliance with Virginia State Regulations.
Assist the teacher in classroom instruction and training.
Maintain accurate, legible documentation in a timely manner.
Demonstrate knowledge and follow‑through with residential treatment plans and interventions.
Respond to residents in a caring, mature manner while upholding sound professional boundaries.
Serve as a role model for residents.
Respond to crisis situations and assist in managing aggressive behavior.
Qualifications
At least 21 years of age.
High School Diploma or equivalent; Bachelor’s Degree in a Human Services field preferred.
Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
Experience working with individuals with special needs preferred.
Other Requirements
Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
Use full range of body motion—sit, bend, kneel, or stand—for more than an hour if needed.
Reflect behavior, attitude, and appearance appropriate to the position and support the facility’s philosophy and objectives.
Successfully complete and pass Handle With Care & Verbal De‑escalation Crisis Intervention Training.
Perform facility‑approved First Aid and CPR techniques.
Understand and demonstrate therapeutic boundaries.
Be a team player and offer valuable insight to the team.
Communicate verbally and in written documentation effectively.
Rotate shifts and units as necessary.
