Description
The Central Sterile Instrumentation Clerk collects, cleans, decontaminates, disinfects and/or sterilizes surgical instruments, trays, packs, reusable medical devices and patient‑care equipment according to established standards and procedures to ensure a sterile and functioning supply of materials and equipment.
Responsibilities
Follows established procedures for receiving, collecting, decontaminating, assembling, packaging, and sterilizing medical equipment.
Maintains consistency and continuous workflow between the Operating Room and Central Sterile team; monitors surgery schedules daily and reviews Physician Preference Cards to prioritize workflow and meet case needs.
Monitors stock levels and maintains inventory in sterile processing, the operating room, and equipment storage areas, ensuring instruments are readily available to users in a timely manner.
Performs cleaning, decontamination and sterilization processes precisely for instrumentation and flexible endoscopes, following manufacturer instructions and all reprocessing steps.
Prepares, wraps and packages instrumentation in containers with care, following appropriate procedures.
Inspects work for quality and safety, reprocessing items that are not acceptable and documenting all actions thoroughly.
Inspects instruments and packages for damage, removing or returning items that do not pass inspection.
Assists with cleaning operating rooms between cases and performs terminal cleaning, using proper disinfecting chemicals, tools and techniques on all surfaces.
Maintains readiness of Emergency Code Carts and trauma trays, restocking supplies and checking expiration dates.
Performs preventive maintenance tasks, testing and inspecting equipment as scheduled or needed, and initiates maintenance, repair or replacement when required.
Completes quality testing of machines per departmental and manufacturer procedures, ensuring consistency for decontamination of instruments and medical equipment.
Keeps detailed computerized documentation of all sterilization processes, including load content, cycle selection, parameters and biological results; reports irregularities to supervisor.
Responds professionally and promptly to emergency requests.
Incorporates infection control guidelines during transferring, storing and transporting sterile and non‑sterile packages, assuring ready release from the department.
Adheres to all safety requirements, wearing PPE and reporting safety or environmental issues.
Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of state and federal regulations related to occupational exposure, compliance and work‑practice controls.
Participates in continuous quality improvement activities.
Participates in staff meetings and in‑service training on topics such as infection control, patient safety, quality improvement, MSDS and OSHA standards.
Education
High School Diploma or equivalent required; any higher education from an accredited college will supersede this requirement.
Licensure/Certification
Sterile Processing Certification required after one year of experience and must be kept current throughout employment.
Experience
1 Year of Sterile Processing experience or completion of a Sterile Processing Program.
Preferred
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Knowledge of sterilization processes, documentation and delivery of sterile packages.
Knowledge of surgical instrument preparation and assembly, inspection and packaging.
Knowledge of decontamination, disinfection and cleaning methods.
Required
Good interpersonal skills; ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with teammates, supervisors, providers, administration and patients.
Strong attention to detail with the ability to complete assignments accurately and in a timely manner.
