Aquatics Recreation Program Coordinator

Job Summary

The Parks & Community Services Department is seeking a dynamic Aquatic Recreation Program Coordinator to support the one‑city organizational approach for high performance. The Aquatic Recreation Program Coordinator assists the Aquatic Program Manager with program planning, supervising staff, and managing the daily operations of the Bellevue Aquatic Center, seasonal swim areas at six beach parks, one boat launch, and contracted operations at two boathouses. This role involves maintaining a diverse range of aquatic programming while serving a broad community.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Strategic Planning: Work collaboratively with the Aquatic Program Manager and Recreation Supervisor to develop a work plan, timeline, goals and objectives, performance measures, and outcomes; monitor performance and guide staff to adjust program administration and strategy to ensure standards are achieved.
Programming: Work with the Aquatic Recreation Supervisor to develop, plan, promote, implement, and review a wide range of community programs and events, with a focus on progressive swim lesson programs for all ages that meet the needs of a diverse community.
Staff Development: Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate Aquatic staff; develop and manage staff who administer programs and implement policies and procedures.
Facility Management: Ensure facility and program equipment are safe and operational; coordinate repairs and enhancements with the Aquatic Program Manager and Resource Management.
Contract/Renter Management: Review and evaluate operational policies, procedures, and agreements related to contracted programs, services, and third‑party renters of the facilities, including pricing, fees, and schedules.
Community Relations: Ensure positive customer relations, resolve complaints, and participate on advisory committees and program teams.
Budget: Develop and administer program budgets, track revenue and expenditures, and recommend adjustments.
Supervision Received And Exercised

Works under the general supervision of the Aquatic Program Manager.
Exercises supervision over administrative support staff, lifeguard staff, and renter groups as assigned.
Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of public sector organization and aquatic program operations.
Knowledge of project management, facility management, schedule planning, and program budgeting.
Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and departmental policies.
Knowledge of employee management practices and technology for a public aquatic center.
Excellent oral and written communication, public speaking, negotiation, and customer service skills.
Ability to interact with and serve a diverse population.
Ability to plan and conduct lifeguard in‑service training sessions and swimming lessons for all ages.
Ability to apply policies and procedures in ambiguous situations and develop cooperative relationships with citizens, businesses, and other stakeholders.
Ability to supervise staff planning, monitoring, training, counseling, and discipline.
Ability to prepare and analyze schedules, reports, manuals, and correspondence.
Education, Experience, And Other Requirements

Graduation from an accredited two‑year college or university with a degree in recreation, physical education, social sciences, business, or related field.
Four or more years of progressively responsible aquatic management and program planning experience, including supervisory experience.
Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge and skills.
Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification (or ability to obtain within six months).
Preferred: ARC Lifeguard Instructor, Instructor Trainer, and Water Safety Instructor certifications; ARC Lifeguard Instructor certification needed within first year.
Desirable: Aquatic Facility Operator or Certified Pool Operator certifications.
Candidate must successfully pass a criminal background check prior to being hired.
Physical Demands

Work requires walking, talking, hearing, using hands to handle or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reaching with hands and arms.
Vision requirements include close focus and ability to adjust focus.
Noise level is usually moderately quiet.
