Overview
Hour Children is seeking volunteers for multiple programs and opportunities across our organization, including after‑school, early learning, thrift stores, food pantry, mentoring, and administrative support. Programs offer volunteers chances to support children and families and assist with community outreach and services.
Responsibilities
Hour After School Program: provide one‑to‑one tutoring and cultural enrichment activities; assist with homework, read to children, and support special activities. Program runs Monday–Friday, 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM.
Hour Early Learning Program (HELP): assist in a licensed daycare environment; support children 0–5+ years by engaging in developmentally appropriate activities and, optionally, assist with office/administrative tasks. HELP operates Monday–Friday from 7:30 AM – 6:00 PM.
Hour Children Thrift Stores: sort and clean donated goods; assist with customer service and store operations as needed. Thrift stores support the surrounding community; locations include Hour Children Shop and Fancy Thrift in Long Island City, NY.
Food Pantry: assist with distributing food, stocking shelves, and interacting with clients; pantry hours include Monday 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM and Thursday 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM.
Hour Working Women Program (HWWP): support an employment training program with components such as Basic Office Skills & Computer Training, Financial Literacy, and Professional Development; opportunities may include leading curriculum-based workshops. Program runs Monday–Thursday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
Mentoring Program: Hour Friends in Deed provides mentors to children (ages 4–18) with a parent in prison; mentors support children’s social skills, goals, and activities such as sports, hiking, cooking, homework, outings, or movies.
Hour Women to Women Mentoring Program: mentor adults released from Taconic or Bayview Correctional Facilities, providing guidance on daily living, budgeting, job searching, and connections to support services; mentors are recruited through outreach and community engagement.
Administrative: upon matched special skills and background, volunteers may provide administrative support with flexible times.
Additional Information
All volunteer opportunities may provide school credit or meet community service hours. Hour Children may host special events such as volunteer photoshoots for graduates; volunteer roles may include makeup artistry and hairstyling for events.
