Job Overview
The Supervisor of Patient Access manages the daily operations of the department in the area to which they are assigned, ensuring a timely and efficient patient throughput process while providing excellent customer service. The Supervisor ensures that departmental policies and procedures are followed, supervises staff, creates schedules and ensures that the work done by the staff is accurate and meets regulatory and policy standards. The Supervisor provides leadership support to the team while also completing Patient Access functions on a daily basis.
Qualifications – Required
High School diploma
Bachelor’s Degree
Five to seven years of health care or health‑related experience with concentration in automated registration processes and interaction with managed care industry
Minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience
Knowledge in all aspects of registration, insurance verification, authorization requirements, non‑Federal and Federal billing regulations, and state programs such as Charity Care
Qualifications – Preferred

Full‑Time, 40 hours per week
Essential Functions
Ensures the accuracy and integrity of all registrations, which includes correcting and tracking registration errors via daily reports
Enforces compliance with all departmental policies and procedures in conjunction with the goals and mission statement of the organization
Provides oversight of the educational needs of the staff and addresses these needs when applicable
Utilizes necessary systems to review daily alerts, address system errors, and request system rules in order to improve registration accuracy
Is responsible for the education of all staff and must ensure all registration staff is competent and recertified yearly on mandatory education
Achieves expected results and outcomes without compromising RWJBH core values, processes or procedures
Ensures timely registrations of all patients and completes registrations within the department when necessary
Maintains adequate staffing levels including the review and completion of staff schedules
Provides on‑call support to staff as needed to ensure urgent issues are addressed timely
Communicates issues and policies to all staff members as it relates to department and ancillary areas
Monitors all key performance indicators and creates action plans when goals are not met
Delegates and prioritizes work assignments in relation to the patient’s needs and staff competence
Informs staff of system updates and provides any/all pertinent information related to registration issues
Provides clear communication and expectations for staff around KPIs and goals
Reviews and recommends any changes to departmental policies
Maintains open communication with management
Oversees and supervises all department functions including training, onboarding and orientation of all new staff
Reviews work for accuracy and completeness, utilizing staff scorecards and analyzing the results with them to identify strengths and areas requiring improvement
Demonstrates good interpersonal skills and a positive demeanor in working with patients, employees and other organizational staff
Provides coaching and development of all staff performing these functions and assists in implementing short- and long-term plans and objectives to improve customer service and collect quality information
Contributes to a positive environment that leads to the overall success of revenue cycle and organizational goals
Operates with a high degree of autonomy and authority while working within the framework of RWJBH philosophy and policies
Maintains professional affiliations and enhances professional growth to stay abreast of the latest trends in hospital, department and administration services
Completes all other duties as assigned
