Water Supply Maintenance Worker/Construction

Employees in this class perform work which involves the skilled operation of heavy construction equipment and performance of complex maintenance work in the Water Supply System. Employees in this class operate, inspect and perform general repairs to motor equipment and are skilled in the performance of labor associated with the maintenance and construction of the City water supply system, watershed, building structures and grounds. The work is performed under the direction of higher level Water Supply System personnel. Employees of this class may coordinate the work activities of a repair crew. Related work is performed as required.

Repairs major and minor leaks and breaks on conduits, which requires excavation of conduit lines with backhoe and shovel, shoring/terracing of excavations, plugging of minor leaks, welding of joints, painting, and reconstruction or replacement of lines with major breaks;

Performs lawn, grounds, right-of-way and watershed maintenance, and related equipment maintenance;

Performs maintenance, repair, and installation of water conduits and appurtenances;

Performs maintenance of watershed property including tree trimmings, pruning, brush clearing, erosion control, and refuse collection and disposal;

Performs maintenance, repair, and installation of roads, including drainage pipes and structures;

Maintains and performs general repairs to any assigned equipment;

Cleans, maintains and repairs buildings, grounds, and structures;

Operates backhoe, front end loader, dump truck, snow plows, salt spreaders, and other heavy construction equipment;

Operates valves, locates pipes, and records pipe, valve and field measurements;

Performs skilled and complex maintenance tasks, such as masonry, carpentry, plumbing and electrical repair, and metal fabrication;

Keeps assigned equipment in clean and working order;

Changes chemical storage tanks (e.g., chlorine, ammonia storage tanks);

Performs daily vehicle inspection and preventive maintenance and reports any defects found before and after operation in writing on required forms;

Completes daily checks of water testing equipment, reads meters, gauges, and instruments, and completes forms to maintain adequate chlorination/disinfection;

Operates chainsaws, brush cutters, brush chippers, tractors, lawn mowers and other grounds maintenance equipment;

Operates air, hydraulic, gas, and electric powered hand tools;

Follows safety procedures and practices relevant to accident prevention methods;

May coordinate the work activities of a repair crew.

Qualifications
Completion of coursework through the eighth (8th) grade OR work experience that required the ability to read, understand and complete simple forms and documents; PLUS

Two (2) years of experience in water installation, water systems or supply maintenance, or municipal/industrial waste water systems;

One (1) year of experience in one or more of the mechanical or construction trades (e.g., sheet metal work, carpentry, pipefitting);

One (1) year of experience in the operation of heavy construction equipment.

NOTE
The required experience above may have been gained separately or concurrently.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Possession of a valid New York State Class B Operator's license at time of appointment. This license must be maintained throughout employment in this title.
