Job Summary
The Community Service Officer (Security Guard) assists law enforcement in the protection of lives and property through vigilant surveillance of the campus, utilizing motorized and foot patrols. Duties include, but are not limited to opening campus facilities for business and securing them following the close of business. Will be cross‑trained as a dispatcher. Will be required to work as a dispatcher if needed.
NOTE: In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required eligibility verification form upon hire. This position does not offer sponsorship for employment visas.
Responsibilities
Perform routine public safety duties in accordance with established guidelines
Patrol assigned areas to ensure personnel safety, building and equipment security
Warn violators of rule infractions and assist with traffic & parking violations
Provide high profile uniformed public safety services for campus events and for the University community
Engage in active and regular patrols to assist in providing a safer and more secure campus environment
Function as a public safety‑first responder for non‑criminal incidents, and perform support roles to sworn police officers
Serve as a Campus Security Authority as defined by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act)
Perform active and regular patrols (foot or vehicle) of all campus areas
Provide close and regular surveillance of campus properties, including locking and unlocking buildings according to designated schedules
Enforce University rules and regulations
Assist with all traffic and parking related responsibilities
Act as a knowledgeable resource to students, staff and visitors on the campus
Provide general information such as directions and up‑to‑date information about campus events
Establish professional relationships with students, faculty and staff in order to foster trust
Continuously pursue additional knowledge and skills as it relates to assigned functions as a Public Safety Specialist
Participate in training and maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of current procedures regarding FEMA NIMS, I‑C‑S, and CERT protocols
May be required to perform job‑related duties other than those specifically delineated in this position
Required Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Excellent customer service skills
High professional standards, including the ability to maintain confidentiality of highly sensitive information
Must be able to communicate effectively (verbal and written)
Must be at least 21 years of age
Must successfully complete one week of basic patrolling procedure training which includes qualifying with the expandable baton and Taser qualification
Must pass a pre‑employment criminal background check
Must possess a valid Georgia Driver's license in good standing
Proposed Salary
17.00 per hour.

Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws, criminal and traffic codes, search and seizure laws, Savannah State University policies and procedures, and Department policies and procedures
Knowledge of traffic investigation techniques and procedures
Knowledge of the University buildings and area
Knowledge of first‑aid and CPR techniques
Skilled in operating security vehicles, emergency equipment, and other standard and specialized security equipment
Skilled in using computers for word processing
Ability to meet current requirements set forth in the Georgia Mandate Security
Ability to analyze situations and adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action based on surrounding hazards and circumstances
Ability to maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with others
Ability to cooperate with fellow employees as a team member
Other Information
The work is performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, running, bending, crouching, or stooping
The employee must occasionally lift light and heavy objects up to 40 lbs, climb ladders, use equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, the ability to distinguish between shades of color, and use the physical force necessary to arrest and restrain persons
The work is performed indoors in an office, in a vehicle, or outside
The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, machinery with moving parts, infectious or contagious diseases, life‑threatening situations, and inclement weather
The work requires the use of protective devices
