Water/Wastewater Plant Operator Technician & Apprentice
Performs technician work in the operation of a water/wastewater plant and distribution system.

Water/Wastewater Plant Operator I, II, III & IV
Performs specialized work in the operation of a water/wastewater plant and distribution system as a licensed operator.

Mandatory testing position that requires drug testing.

Essential functions are fundamental job duties. They do not include marginal tasks which are also performed but are incidental to the primary functions. Checks all wells and lift stations on a daily basis.

Assists with collecting samples at wells and wastewater treatment plant.

Assists in maintenance of all chemical feed systems.

Performs routine tests required for efficient operation of both water and wastewater treatment plant.

Checks all treatment processes to ensure plant is operating at peak efficiency.

Performs routine maintenance and minor construction as assigned.

Reports any discrepancies found to lead operator.

Attends training sessions in the safe operation of water/wastewater plants.

Interacts with the public in an effective and courteous manner.

Must demonstrate commitment to our mission, vision, values and goals and represent the County in a professional, dignified manner at all times both in actions and appearance.

May have a role in the County’s disaster preparation and/or disaster recovery efforts, as designated in the County Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan; may be required to work before, during and/or after an emergency.

Must be able to meet minimum attendance standards.

Performs related duties as required.

Essential Physical, Visual and Communication Skills
The physical requirements are of medium work and include exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven or rocky surfaces; recurring climbing, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activities; or recurring lifting of moderately heavy items up to 50 pounds. The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities, such as above‑average agility or dexterity. It requires grasping by applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm, repetitive motion of the wrists, hands and/or fingers, and operating a motor vehicle to conduct site visits. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, extensive reading, visual inspection of small defects or parts, using measurement devices, and assembly or fabrication of parts at close distances. Requires the ability to differentiate between colors or shades of color. The worker must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly, and must receive detailed information through oral communication.

Environmental Conditions
The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress. The worker may be exposed to one or more disagreeable conditions such as irate customers, outdoor weather conditions, excessive noise, extreme temperatures, odors, dust, chemicals for more than 50% of the work time. The worker is required to wear a respirator.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of general mechanical repair and maintenance; operating procedures applicable to treatment, functions and mechanics of pumps and other plant mechanical equipment. Required to operate a personal computer and related software applications. Required to learn methods and practices of modern water/wastewater plant; read meters and charts accurately; maintain records of shift operations; understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Water/Wastewater Plant Operator Technician (Starting Salary $17.84 hourly, DOQ)
A four‑year high school diploma or its educational equivalent; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Licensure: Valid driver’s license at date of hire and maintenance while employed. Must complete a Florida Department of Environmental Protection approved Wastewater course within one year of employment.

Water/Wastewater Plant Operator Apprentice (Starting Salary $18.69 hourly, DOQ)
A four‑year high school diploma or its educational equivalent; supplemented by one year of experience performing utility maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Licensure: Valid driver’s license at date of hire and maintenance while employed. Completion and certification of an approved Florida Department of Environmental Protection Wastewater course within the past five years. Must pass a Florida Department of Environmental Protection Certification exam and obtain license within one year of employment.

Water/Wastewater Plant Operator I (Starting Salary $19.29 hourly, DOQ)
A four‑year high school diploma or its educational equivalent; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Licensure: Valid driver’s license at date of hire and maintenance while employed. Requires a Florida Water or Wastewater Class “C” (or higher) Operator License and must maintain it while employed. A Class “B” commercial driver license is preferred.

Water/Wastewater Plant Operator II (Starting Salary $20.77 hourly, DOQ)
A four‑year high school diploma or its educational equivalent; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Licensure: Valid Class “B” commercial driver license with air brake endorsement at date of hire and maintenance while employed. Requires successful completion of a Florida Department of Environmental Protection approved correspondence course certification in water or wastewater, and a Florida Water or Wastewater Class “C” (or higher) Operator License and maintenance while employed.

Water/Wastewater Plant Operator III (Starting Salary $22.27 hourly, DOQ)
A four‑year high school diploma or its educational equivalent; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Licensure: Valid Class “B” commercial driver license with air brake endorsement at date of hire and maintenance while employed. Requires successful completion of a Department of Environmental Protection License Exam, a Florida Water Class “C” (or higher) and a Wastewater Class “C” (or higher) Operator License and maintenance while employed.

Water/Wastewater Plant Operator IV (Starting Salary $23.93 hourly, DOQ)
A four‑year high school diploma or its educational equivalent; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Experience in a lead/supervisory capacity is preferred.

Licensure: Valid Class “B” commercial driver license with air brake endorsement at date of hire and maintenance while employed. Requires successful completion of a Department of Environmental Protection License Exam, a Florida Water Class “C” (or higher) and a Wastewater Class “B” (or higher) Operator License and maintenance while employed.
