POSITION PURPOSE
Responsible for administering occupational therapy modalities of treatment as supervised by the staff occupational therapist. Administers treatments and occupational agents as directed by the staff occupational therapist, after the occupational therapist has evaluated the patient. The OTA assists with restoration of patient functioning to prevent disability following injury, disease or occupational disability. Assists patients to reach their maximum performance and level of functioning, while learning to live within the limits of their capabilities. The OTA participates in operational aspects of the department, maintains performance improvement activities within the department and participates in CQI activities. Participates in all infection control, departmental equipment training, organizational safety and fire safety programs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES
Providing treatment as directed by the staff occupational therapist; adheres to standards of occupational therapy practice.
Observing and evaluating treatment effect and discussing observations with the staff occupational therapist.
Performing components of an appropriate assessment on all patients as related to the therapy requested and provided and reassessments as per policy, including neonate, pediatric, adolescent, geriatric patients and the general patient population.
Formulating a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs; assessing effectiveness of learning; involving family as appropriate; apprising the staff occupational therapist of conclusions.
Demonstrating knowledge of occupational therapy modalities.
Treating patients and their families with respect and dignity; identifying and addressing psychosocial needs of patients and family.
Managing and operating equipment safely and correctly; maintaining department cleanliness and safety.
Interacting professionally with patient/family and involving them in the formation of the plan of care.
Communicating appropriately and clearly to physicians, facility staff and members of the department.
Coordinating and assisting with directing patient care to ensure patient’s needs are met and facility policy is followed.
Maintaining records pertinent to personnel and operation of the department.
Demonstrating an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
Maintaining a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
Consulting other departments as appropriate to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities.
Ensuring documentation meets current standards and policies.
Assisting in ordering supplies, maintaining adequate PAR levels to assure all supplies and equipment are readily available.
Participating in infection control, departmental training equipment training and organizational CQI activities.
Participating in educational staff performance improvement inservices; assisting with orientation and inservice training for certified department staff members; participating in guidance and educational programs.
Requirements
Education/Certification: Associates Degree in Occupational Therapy.
Regulatory: Licensed by State as an Occupational Therapy Assistant.
Experience: Experience working with geriatric population preferred.
Good interpersonal and public relations skills.
Solid analytical, creative, and problem‑solving abilities.
Able to assist and coordinate with others.
Able to use computer in basic word processing, email correspondence, and excel applications.
